Syracuse Player Quotes
Syracuse vs. Providence
Jonny Flynn, Fr., G
On Scoop’s suspension:
“He is just out. We could have used him today. His contribution is needed out there. We came through, though, and got a good win. We found out he would not be playing with us yesterday. He practiced with us, but coach did not put him on the starting team. Nobody asked questions, though.”
On the well-executed play out of timeout:
“That was a great call by coach. They were suctioned to me. Donte’ [Greene] was coming up the weak side. He just drew it from out of bounds. It worked to perfection.”
On whether anything in the league surprises him anymore:
“No. We never know what is going to happen every game. We were up by double-digits and Providence came back with what seemed like 17 3’s in a row. You can’t be thinking about surprises and just have to know that every game is going to be tough. No lead is a safe lead, even if you have double-digits. A team like Providence lives and dies by the three’s. They hit a lot tonight. At DePaul, we just need to come out and execute like we did today.”
On the importance of this game:
“We knew all week this was a game we had to win. If we could just string a couple more wins together, we should fare well.”
Donte Greene, Fr., F
On whether this was a game they refused to lose:
“Yes. We let them come back, but we definitely weren’t going to lose this game. I was not going to let it happen. Whatever happened, whether it was ref trouble or foul trouble, we were not going to lose.”
On whether the lack of numbers would be an excuse:
“No. This is a talented team. Just about every guy who steps on the floor can score at will every time. Some nights some guys are on and some are off. The lack of players is definitely not an excuse for us because we are still talented.”
On a game of survival:
“That is what this game is all about. Every game we are going to run. It was not so much of a sense of urgency, but we did need to win, especially at home.”
Kristof Ongenaet, Jr., F
On being only six-deep:
“I think we just have to be a little more careful of getting into foul trouble. Other than that, I think we have an advantage because we are taller. We need to get those rebounds because it is crucial for us to not give our opponents second chances. I think that six or seven guys is not that big of a problem.”
On playing without Scoop:
“We are not used to playing without that extra guard, but I’m sure we will adapt really quick. We are already learning through today’s game and after tomorrow and the next game, we will have progressed even further.”
On his own play:
“I think players are starting to notice me more and when I am open, they give me the ball.”
On their zone play:
“I think that was crucial for us to win the game. We could have been a little more active down the stretch, but that’s the game. I think we did a decent job.”
