Rising First Practice
Sophomore forward Julie Rising
On getting to know each other before the initial practice:
We’ve been skating together and spent time together going to games and going out to dinner. We do not have to be on the ice to build chemistry. We went to the Inn Complete last night. We talk about everything when we meet, not just hockey. There are a lot of freshmen so we talk a lot about college and see how everyone is adjusting to Syracuse.
On the geographical differences amongst players:
It’s great to have teammates from all over the place. It makes the bonding experience special. You get to learn about different parts of the world. I don’t know many people from British Columbia. Now I know people from Ontario. It makes for more conversation amongst us.
On what attracted her to Syracuse University:
I saw opportunity in it. I thought it would be a really great experience pioneering a program. I have an exciting new coach and great athletics facilities around me. We will definitely have a really good team in the coming years. The hope of being in the Frozen Four sooner rather than later was a chance I had to jump at.
On growing pains attached to a new program:
I’m prepared for anything. I think it has to do with being able to deal with adversity. There are a lot of experienced players we are going to play against and I’m excited for that challenge.
On how she found out about Syracuse’s new team:
I was online and saw that a program was starting at Syracuse. I did my own research. I was looking at St. Lawrence, a couple of years before Bemidji and I noticed Coach Flanagan was going to coach Syracuse. I just went from there and wanted to play for an experienced coach.
On coming to Syracuse:
I hear a lot about the Orange on the west coast. They have a top tier basketball program and lacrosse just won a national championship. It just felt like something I wanted to do and be a part of the next three years.
On how the first practice went:
It was really hard. We have to get into great conditioning shape after the summer. It was exciting to get back on the ice and we were all pumped.
On expectations for the season:
I think we have high expectations. There are a lot of teams we match up well with. There are a lot of transfers with experience. We have the advantage that no one knows what we can offer so that will work in our favor.
On playing for Coach Flanagan:
It means a lot to me to play for him. He has seen the best the world can offer in his years of coaching. It definitely makes us want to work hard and play up to his expectations for the program.
