Rutgers Quotes
Syracuse vs. Rutgers
November 21, 2009
Carrier Dome-Syracuse, N.Y.
Head Coach Greg Schiano
“We didn’t coach very well and we didn’t play very well. We didn’t play like a team that was ready to play a BIG EAST football game, nor did we coach that way. If we don’t do that this week, this is what’s going to happen. We have to move on and work. We don’t have a lot of time. It’s coming on us Friday.”
On the number of sacks against Rutgers:
“We have to really watch the tape, but there were some things that we hadn’t really seen, which is a good job by them. It reminds me very much of a week ago, except we’re on the other side of it. I’ve been on either side of it, but we just bought what we’re going to get for the rest of the year so we’ve just got to get prepared for it. We have rules for that stuff, but when you haven’t seen it a ton of times, sometimes you’re just a step away from it. There are a lot of reasons why things happen, but more than anything, I think we didn’t coach or play well.”
On whether Rutgers’ performance was affected by the noise in the Dome:
“I don’t think. Look, my hat’s off to Syracuse. They played well. They cracked extremely well. I thought their plan was excellent. They played extremely hard and they played with emotion. There were a couple times where things could have rocked back our way, but they bowed their neck, so my hat’s off to them. That’s why you play the game. We just didn’t play very well and they did, so that’s the result.”
On Syracuse’s performance:
“They did a nice job. They did everything. Their call was right against our call almost every time. It was one of those deals where when I watch the tape maybe there will be a guy who didn’t execute their job, but their calls gave them a good chance. One thing I know was that we weren’t ready to play today, obviously as we went out, and that’s on me. We just can’t go out and play that way. To their credit, they kept fighting right until the very finish. I was worried about getting somebody hurt there right at the very end, but they played to the finish. I’m not going to talk about being proud of them and moral victories, but I’m always proud of them. They’re good kids and they just played until we told them to stop playing, but it wasn’t good enough today. We have to move on.”
Ryan Blaszcyk, Senior, Center
On how Syracuse’s defense was able to confuse the offense:
“They played really great. They were moving their safeties around and doing a lot of stuff to hide their blitzes and they just played really great.”
On Rutgers’ quarterback being able to get up and play after all the sacks:
“Tom [Savage] has matured so much over the season. He has the future in front of him and he’s going to be so great.”
On Syracuse’s ability to get through the offensive line:
“Syracuse played really great today. It was really the whole day. They were just playing out of their minds.
“We allowed a lot of sacks today. We have to get back in the film room immediately and see where our holes are and get ready for next week.”
Kevin Haslam, Senior, Offensive Line
On Rutgers’ poor offensive performance:
“It was frustrating out there. They put a lot of good pressure on us. We couldn’t get it going and they had a great game.”
On how Rutgers went from their level of play against USF to their play this week:
“We weren’t really in the moment. I guess we could’ve focused a little better this week. Syracuse played a great game, both offensively and defensively and we were just not in the moment.”
