Opening Statement
“Well to start off, I thought we had a major problem rebounding. They got way to many offensive rebounds. They had 19 offensive rebounds and we really can’t give that up. They were setting ball screens and kind of slipping to the basket on us. It is something that I saw in the game and we tried to fix it at half-time and obviously we did not get that rectified as far as getting the box out when that kid comes right down the middle of the lane. They got a few of those, but that is an easy fix, so we will get that straight in practice the next couple of days.”
“I am very happy with the win, obviously. It is good to be 4-0. I am very pleased with our effort and our team. I guess I have to talk about Nicole Michael, 36-17 a monster game and I thought she still passed up a bunch of shots that she could have took. Just a phenomenal game. One of the best performances that I have seen in women’s basketball. She was on fire and she shot the ball well. She didn’t take bad shots, she took good shots on the floor of our offense. She made some when they were flying at her and she was uncontested and overall she played a monster, monster game. I was very happy for her. She deserves this because she really works hard for our program. She is the face of our program and to have someone step-up like that and to give it everything she has. She is a little banged up and a little sore, but she did everything we asked her to do on both ends of the floor, including 17 rebounds.”
“I thought that Erica Morrow played great. She had nine assists, four turnovers. Normally she is four assists and nine turnovers, so that was good. She is started to take care of the ball and be more patient and she played the point guard position pretty well tonight. Lynnae Lampkins was a little sore from the last couple days of practice, we went pretty hard. She is a little sore, so that was the reason for her not playing as many minutes at the point tonight. It was good that we could rest her tonight. Tyler Ash is a little sore, so we could rest her too. So, a win like that with those two, who are pretty much one of our top subs off the bench. I was very pleased with that. “
“Overall, really happy with the effort, for the win. Our young kids, Carmen Tyson-Thomas, Elashier Hall and Kayla Alexander really played solid. They played solid minutes for us, I was very happy.”
On why the team did not press:
“They were tired, really tired. We had a rough couple of days. Obviously, I was not too happy after the last game. We went pretty hard in practice the last couple of days and I knew that I was trying to go in a reverse way. If I could get back in half court and contain them and keep them where we need to keep them. We were not going to worry about getting out there and letting them run past us because they have very good shooters on the wing. We played a lot of zone today. We played 95% zone and it was very good. One kid, (Binghamton’s Andrea Homes) was 8-of-16 behind the arc, but to be quite honest she has not been shooting the ball like that and when she got going. We got it straight at half-time. She had two the second half and six in the first half. I thought we did a very good job of containing her in the second half.”
On guarding Holmes in the second half:
“We paid as much attention to her as possible. When you start shooting the ball like that, anything can happen. We just made sure that when they ball screened, we went over the top to chase her off the screen, chase her off the spot. She was coming off that ball screen and having to put her feet together and shoot it and that is what was happening. I was getting on Tasha (Harris) about her getting the shots on the side. Tasha said, ‘coach we are going underneath the screens, remember.’ I was like ‘skip that, no more.’ It was a kind of adjustment that we had to make. At half-time with our staff in the locker room we made the adjustment and it was a good adjustment because we kind of slowed her down a little bit.”
On being comfortable with the lead in the second half:
“I was comfortable with the game, but Binghamton is a very good team. I think they are picked second or third in their conference. They are picked pretty high in their conference and they are not a bad basketball team. They are going to win some games and they are going to make some shots. We knew they had two shooters on the wing. In our scout we had (Jackie Ward and Erica Carter) shooters and they were 4-of-19, so they shot them. The other kid (Holmes). We paid some much attention to the kids on the wing that she kind of got going. So, we shut down the kids that we had on our scouting report as shooters and somebody else just stepped up and that is what good teams do. They step up and make plays and she did it.”
On getting ball inside in the second half:
“Well, we wanted to continue to attack that high post because we thought we could get the ball to the high post and still throw it out to the wing and let Erica (Morrow) and (Nicole Michael) shoot it or throw it down low to Kayla (Alexander) and Vionca (Murray). I thought we did pretty well as the half progressed because they really started closing out. Anytime you have Juanita Ward or Tyler Ash at the high post you need to pay a lot of attention to them. When they ran at them, we were able to dump the ball down low. So, I thought overall with that it was great. Tasha (Harris) played a very good game at point guard, nine assists and one turnover. You cannot ask for more than that from your point guard.”
On offensive game:
“Well, I mean we played really well. To score 87 points is really good. Our goal is to score 75, we figure if we can score 75 we can win. If we scored 75 tonight, we would have won by one, so we still would have won, hopefully. Our goal is to score 75 points at least and we scored 87, so I was very pleased with our offense. Erica (Morrow) and Nicole (Michael) stepped up and when your two best players step up and have this kind of game, you have to be very happy with your offense and production.”
On if the team is where he wants to be heading into Cancun:
“We are, just rebounding. We really need to solve rebounding. Old Dominion is very aggressive and they are very athletic. You guys know the history of their program. They win and they win every year. I remember when I was a high school coach. I remember seeing Old Dominion, I think they won eight or nine conference championships in a row. Wendy Larry is a great coach and she does a very good job. I am very excited to g
