Orange Notch Second Conference WinThe Orangewomen improved their record to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in The BIG EAST Conference with a 12-7 victory against Rutgers on April 7. Graduate student Lauren Brady (Acton, MA) led the team with four goals and one assist.
The teams were tied at two before Brady found Jessica Trombley (Keuka Park, NY) for a goal with 5:44 to play in the first half. The Orangewomen netted two more goals in the half and led 5-2 at the intermission. Brady, who registered three goals in the first half, and freshman Leigh-Ann Zimmer (Farmingdale, NY) each posted a goal in the first minute of the second half. The Orangewomen went on to outscore the Lady Knights 7-5 in the period. Junior defender Carrie Soults (Washington, DC) posted a pair of goal in the second half and assisted on two others in the game.
Soults Still on Top
Junior defender Carrie Soults (Washington, DC) added two goals and two assists against Rutgers,
maintaining her position at the top of SUs scoring list. She has 21 goals and four assists this
season and needs two goals to tie her 23-goal performance in 2000. Soults also leads the
Orangewomen with eight goals and 11 points in BIG EAST competition.
Zimmer Attracts Attention on Offense
Freshman Leigh-Ann Zimmer (Farmingdale, NY) posted her third consecutive hat trick in Syracuses
win against Rutgers. She is second on the team in scoring with 14 goals and three assists. Zimmer
is the only member of the freshman class to start for the Orangewomen in 2001.
Trombley Time
Sophomore Jessica Trombley (Keuka Park, NY) netted her second goal of the season to give SU a
one-point advantage over Rutgers in the first half of play. Trombley has three points, including
one assist, in six games this season.
Brady Burns BIG EAST Goalies
Graduate student Lauren Brady (Acton, MA) has scored six of her nine goals and seven of her 11
points in BIG EAST play. Brady has kept conference goalies busy, firing 20 of her 29 shots this
season during BIG EAST contests. She is second in school history with 90 goals and 102 points.
April 2
Orangewomen Tally Two Hat Tricks in Colgate WinSyracuse received three goals each from freshman Leigh-Ann Zimmer (Farmingdale, NY) and graduate student Jenna Szyluk (Longmeadow, MA) to lead the team in its 17-4 victory against Colgate on Wednesday, March 28. Syracuse outscored Colgate 11-1 in the first half, including two consecutive goals by senior Stacey Brown (Scotia, NY). The Orangewomen were unstoppable in the second half, posting six unanswered goals before the Red Raiders were able to find the net in the final minute-and-a-half. Sophomore Kim Wayne (Scarsdale, NY) set a single-game school-record with seven assists, while senior Katrina Hable (Syracuse, NY) helped out on three others. Eleven Orangewomen scored in the match, including two goals each from Brown and junior Erica Mathewson (Syracuse, NY).
SU Nets Second BIG EAST Win
The Orangewomen posted their second BIG EAST win of the season at
the University of Connecticut. For the second consecutive game,
freshman Leigh-Ann Zimmer (Farmingdale, NY) recorded three goals,
while juniors Carrie Soults (Washington, DC) and Erica Mathewson
(Syracuse, NY) also notched hat tricks in the 17-8 victory.
Syracuse led 10-3 at the intermission and maintained the momentum,
outscoring UConn 6-5 in the second half. Goalkeeper Carla Gigon
(Hingham, MA) had eight saves in the game. Seniors Stacey Brown
(Scotia, NY) and Katrina Hable (Syracuse, NY) netted a pair of
goals each, while sophomore Kim Wayne (Scarsdale, NY) dished out
three assists.
Mathewson Nets Five Goals
Junior Erica Mathewson (Syracuse, NY) posted two solid offensive
outing last week. Mathewson recorded two goals and one assist
against Colgate and added three more goals in SU's victory against
UConn on Sunday. She has appeared in five games this season, after
missing the 2000 season with an injury.
Orangewomen Net a Pair of 17-Goal Games
Seventeen was the magic number for the Orangewomen in consecutive
wins against Colgate and UConn last week. SU had 17 goals in both
games, marking its highest goal total of the 2001 season. The SU
single-game record is 23 goals, set against Albany in 1998.
Lillis Breaks on the Scene
Freshman Danielle Lillis (West Islip, NY) scored her first
collegiate goal and tallied her first assist in SUs 17-4 victory
against Colgate. Lillis was part of SUs 16th and 17th goals of
the game, as she found Sami Stock (Wayne, PA) for a goal in the
51st minute. She found the back of the net herself with 3:50 to
play.
Wayne Tallies School-Record Seven Assists
Sophomore Kim Wayne (Scarsdale, NY) set SUs single-game assists
record, posting seven helpers on SUs matchup with Colgate. Wayne
also posted a goal in the game. Against UConn, she added a goal
and three assists to boost her to second on the team in scoring.
She has three goals and 12 assists on the season.
Freshman on the Forefront
Freshman Leigh-Ann Zimmer (Farmingdale, NY) recorded her second
hat trick of the week in SU's 17-8 victory against UConn. She had
six goals and two assists in two games. She is second on the team
with 11 goals and third with 14 points.
Soults Sets Tone for Scorers
Junior defender Carrie Soults (Washington, DC) continues to pace
the Orangewomen. With her four goals this week, Soults remains the
leading scorer. She has 19 goals and two assists this season, six
points above her closest teammate. She is four goals from tying
her personal season-high for goals, netting 23 last season.
SU Hosts Rutgers
The Orangewomen take to the carpet at the Carrier Dome on April 7
when they host Rutgers. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
March 19
Tenth-Ranked Orangewomen Loses to No. 2 GeorgetownLed by two goals from junior Carrie Soults (Washington, DC), No. 10 Syracuse lost to the No. 2 Georgetown Hoyas, 18-6 Saturday, March 17. Georgetown jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:15 into the contest on Wick Stanwicks first of two goals. Syracuse answered but fell behind 2-1 when Sheehan Stanwick found the back of the net with 21:00 remaining in the first half. The Hoyas took the lead for good by posting five unanswered goals and taking a 7-2 lead with 6:35 left in the opening half. Syracuse scored two more times but entered halftime trailing, 7-4.
Senior midfielder Lauren Brady (Acton, MA) scored a goal just 1:03 into the second half to get the Orangewomen within 7-5, but GU then went on another offensive spurt scoring five goals during the next 10 minutes. Syracuse put one more on the board when Soults tallied her third goal of the game at the 15:43 mark. Sophomore goalkeeper Carla Gigon (Hingham, MA) and senior Tegan Leonard (Charleston, MA) combined for six saves for Syracuse. GU outshot Syracuse, 24-23. The Orangewomen owned a 12-9 advantage on draws.
Soults Continues to Shine
Junior Carrie Soults (Washington DC) continues to be the shining light for the Orangewomen. She leads the team with 11 goals, three assists in three games played. A preseason All-American, Soults is now fifth on SUs all-time goals scored list with 46. Last season, she finished fourth on the team with 23 goals.
Breaking onto the Scene
Two Orangewomen posted their first goals of the season at Georgetown on Saturday. Senior Stacey Brown (Scotia, NY) and junior Devon Baer (Norristown, PA) each scored a goal against the Hoyas. It was Browns 23rd career goal, while Baer nailed her second career goal. Eight Orangewomen have posted goals in 2001. Carrie Soults (Washington, DC) leads with 11 and Katrina Hable (Camillus, NY) is second on the team with three goals. Sophomore Sami Stock (Wayne, PA) and freshman Liegh-Ann Zimmer (Farmingdale, NY) have each posted two goals with Lauren Brady (Acton, MA), Jenna Szyluk (Longmeadow, MA), Brown and Baer each adding a single goal so far this season.

The Orangewomen return home from a two-game road trip to host the University of Massachusetts in a doubleheader with the No. 1 Orangemen. The womens game is set to start at noon with the men hosting Princeton in a 2:30 p.m. contest.
March 12
Syracuse Ranked in IWLCA Top 10Following a 12-10 loss to then No. 7 Virginia at the Carrier Dome last week, the Orangewomen dropped from No. 9 to No. 10 in the Intercollegiate Womens Lacrosse Coaches Association poll.
Orange Dealt 11-7 Defeat at Maryland
The Orangewomen looked to gain their first win of the 2000-01 season on Saturday, March 10, at the University of Maryland. The No. 1-ranked Terrapins won the match, 11-7, at Ludwig Field.
The six-time national champion Terrapins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the early minutes, before Preseason All-American defender Carrie Soults (Washington, DC) struck first for the Orange at the 23:39 mark. Soults had a career-high five goals Saturday.
Maryland maintained its three-goal lead for the next three minutes before senior Lauren Brady (Acton, MA) found the back of the net to start a 3-0 SU run that would tie the game at 4-4. Soults and sophomore attack Sami Stock (Wayne, PA) tallied goals during the scoring streak. The tie stood for four minutes before the Terps pulled away with two goals to finish the half at 6-4. The Terps started the second half on a 3-0 run. Despite three more goals by Soults, Syracuse was outscored 5-3 in the second half.
Did You Say She Was a Defender?
Junior defender Carrie Soults (Washington, DC) led the Orangewomen in scoring in both of their contests this season. Following a three-goal, one-assist performance against No. 3 Virginia on March 3, Soults continued her offensive presence by posting a career-high five goals at Maryland on March 10. Soults, who is a defender, increased her career total to 43 goals, which is fifth on SUs all-time list. She leads the Orangewomen with eight goals and nine points this season.
Great Stock!
Sophomore attackwoman Sami Stock (Radnor, PA) may be small at 52", but her impact on this years team has been very big. Stock has posted two goals and three assists in two games this season. She has six goals and 11 assists in her two-year career.
Soults Leads Scorers
Junior defender Carrie Soults (Washington, DC) is SUs top scorer this season with nine points and eight goals in two games. She is the teams most-efficient scorer, posting goals on 72.7 percent of her shots. Sophomore attackwoman Sami Stock (Radnor, PA) leads the team with three assists and is second on the squad with five points. Senior Katrina Hable (Syracuse, NY) is second on the team with three goals this spring.
Gigon Hits Career-High in Goal
Sophomore goalkeeper Carla Gigon (Hingham, MA) posted a career-high 17 saves in goal for the Orangewomen in their match with Maryland. Gigon has started between the pipes in each match this season and has 24 saves to her credit. Her previous career-high was 15 saves against Boston College in the 2000 season.
Conference-bound Orangewomen
The Orangewomen will face No. 3 Georgetown in their first-ever BIG EAST Conference matchup. This season marks the first for the seven-team league.
BIG EAST teams will play a six-game round-robin conference schedule with the league champion determined by regular-season play. The conference champion will receive an automatic bid to the 16-team 2001 NCAA Division I Womens Lacrosse Championship.
