The Student-Athlete Perspective on the 'Cuse Awards
by ChristinaPuggi ‘11, Field Hockey
I didn’t understand what all the hype was about as we were taking off our turfs and putting on our heels and dresses. The upperclassmen kept telling us freshmen that the ‘Cuse Awards is one of the best events of the year.
Once I arrived at Manley and saw a line of luxury buses waiting to shuttle us over to the Landmark Theater, I realized this isn’t going to be like usual award ceremonies from high school. The show was an extravagant event, as the beautiful Landmark Theater greeted us with delicious food and beverages.
As all the teams gathered in their seats, a highlight video captured everyone’s attention as unbelievable clips from SU’s greatest athletic moments throughout the year scrolled across the screen. The theater filled with pride and spirit as everyone cheered and roared for their coaches and teammates.
I felt like I was at the Academy Awards show, as different awards were introduced and the nominees' faces appeared on the screen in anticipation of the results.
The ‘Cuse Awards had another spark of excitement as student-athletes performed live on center stage. I had no idea that people I come across everyday at Manley Field House were so musically gifted.
The night was unforgettable and something I was proud to be part of. It was great to see everyone join together in celebrating a great year of fierce competition and the extraordinary accomplishments of our student- athletes. The ‘Cuse Awards was a great way to show the dedication and passion Syracuse has for its sports teams.
Now that I know what the ‘Cuse Awards are all about, I am excited to see this year’s show top the last one.
