2010 Meet-By-Meet Results
September 11, 2010 – BIG EAST Preview | Men's Results | Women's Results
The Syracuse University men and women's cross country teams opened the 2010 season in winning fashion as each captured a first-place finish at the BIG EAST Preview. The meet, which was hosted by Syracuse at Jamesville Beach Park, was the first home meet for the Orange since the 2004 season.
Many SU student-athletes turned in strong performances at the meet, including junior Steve Weeks and sophomore Sarah Pagano. Both runners were SU's top finishers and took second place in their respective races. Weeks crossed the finish line of the men's 6k race at 18:22.7, while Pagano finished the women's 5k event with a time of 18:48.4. The Orange finished with four runners in the top 10 spots in both races.
The meet, which included five other BIG EAST teams, gave runners a chance to experience the course at Jamesville Beach Park and prepare for the BIG EAST Championship. Connecticut, DePaul, Seton Hall, South Florida and West Virginia were among those who represented the BIG EAST.
September 18, 2010 – Colgate Invitational | Men's Results | Women's Results
The Syracuse University cross country team turned in another impressive performance at the Colgate Invitational. Both the men and women’s teams secured first-place finishes in back-to-back seasons at Colgate. The Orange was right at home at Lang Cross Country Course as it had returned to compete on that course in each of the last four years.
Senior Steve Murdock (25:27.00) crossed the finish line first in the men’s 8k run to lead a pack of six Orange harriers that claimed the top six spots. Following Murdock across the finish line, all within 11 seconds, were Forrest Misenti, Steve Weeks, Tito Medrano, Sean Keefe and Coret Robinson. The women secured five of the top 10 spots in the 6k race, including junior Lauren Penney (21:36.00), who finished second behind Colgate’s Elise DeRoo. Rounding out SU’s top 10 finishers were Katie Hursey, Sarah Pagano, Catherine DeSarle and Natalie Busby.
October 2, 2010 – Wisconsin adidas Invitational | Men's Results | Women's Results
Senior Katie Hursey paced the 11th-ranked Syracuse University women’s cross country team that took first place at the Wisconsin Invitational. On the men’s side, junior Steve Weeks was SU’s top runner for the squad that finished fourth.
The women’s team topped 20 other schools in the race to improve on its second place finish from a year ago in Wisconsin. Hursey (20:17) finished third overall in the 6k event in a pack of 202 competitors and less than four seconds behind the leader, Florida’s Charlotte Browning. The Orange had three other runners finish in the top 20, including Lauren Penney (20:31), Sarah Pagano (20:41) and Catherine DeSarle (20:42).
Weeks turned in another strong performance finishing 14th out of 212 student-athletes in the 8k race. The No. 11 Orange was slightly edged by three other top 25 teams, including No. 25 Indiana, No. 6 Wisconsin and No. 23 Princeton to claim its fourth-place finish out of the 21 school in attendance. The Wisconsin Invitational marked the first competition of the season for junior Pat Dupont, who finished 34th with a time of 24:18. SU’s other top performers were Tito Medrano (23:59) and Steve Murdock (24:04).
October 16, 2010 – Penn State National | Men's Results | Women's Results
The men's team finished first at the Penn State National meet, while the women finished on the heels of the nation's top team in Villanova.
Junior Tito Medrano led all SU runners across the finish line in sixth place overall with a time of 25:32. Senior Steve Weeks followed just one second later for the Orange. Rounding out Syracuse's top-10 finishers was sophomore Forrest Misenti at 25:38. The men's race featured 263 runners from 26 other institutions from Division I, II and III.
On the women's side, senior Katie Hursey finished sixth out of 291 harriers from 30 other schools from all over the east coast. Her time of 20:53 was just 27 seconds shy of Villanova's Shelia Reid, who led all competitors. Junior Natalie Busbu earned a ninth-place finish with a time of 21:03.
October 22, 2010 – John Reif Memorial | Complete Results
The Syracuse University cross country team competed in the John Reif Memorial, where six freshmen competed for the women and all finished in the top 15 out of 42 runners and the seven men's runners each finished in the top 20.
Brenna Symoniak was SU’s first runner to cross the finish line at 18:58.2, good for a second-place overall finish. She was followed closely by Ashley Smolinka (19.02.5), Julie Jablonski (19:05.8) and Lauren Kersjes (19:14.7), who claimed the next three spots. Alexandra Clinton and Erin Cawley rounded out the Orange’s competitors in the top-15.
Joseph Bubniak lead the Orange men with a fourth-place finish overall at 26:17.4. Zach Rivers (26:32.6) and Patrick Geoghegan (26:36.8) were SU's other top-10 finishers. Matthew Bennett (26:42.2), Erin Schirm (26:43.6), Roman Acosta (26:43.6) and Jonathan Aziz (27:28.9) completed the list of top finishers for the Orange.
October 30, 2010 – BIG EAST Championship | Men's Results | Women's Results
For the second consecutive year, the Syracuse University men’s cross country team claimed the BIG EAST Championship. On the women’s side, SU tied its program-best third place finish from 2009. The event was hosted by Syracuse at Jamesville Beach Park and was the first time since the 2004 season that SU was able to perform in front of a home crowd.
Junior Pat Dupont was SU’s first runner to complete the 8k race in fourth place overall with a time of 25:15.5. Sophomore Forrest Misenti finished closely behind Dupont in sixth place at 25:19.9 and senior Steve Weeks earned a 10th-place finish (25:25.8). Dupont, Misenti and Weeks were each named to the All-BIG EAST honors list for their efforts. The rest of the championship team was comprised of Tito Medrano (25:46.4), Joseph Whelan (26:03.2), Steve Murdock (26:08.7) and Corey Robinson (26:10.7). The Orange finished with 59 points, four points ahead of second place Louisville.
Senior Katie Hursey led all Orange women across the finish line in ninth place with a time of 21:15.1. Hursey and sophomore Sarah Pagano, who finished 14th overall (21:30.2), earned All-BIG EAST honors for their performances. Head coach Chris Fox and the rest of the Orange staff were named the 2010 BIG EAST Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year after guiding the men’s team to back-to-back conference championships.
November 13, 2010 – NCAA Northeast Regionals | Men's Results | Women's Results
For the second time in as many years, the Syracuse University men and women's cross country teams captured the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship. The event was hosted by Yale and Fairfield Universities at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, Conn.
Five harriers from each team earned All-Northeast Region honors for their performances at the meet. Sophomore Forrest Misenti was the first runner to cross the finish line for the Orange in the 10k race in sixth place overall with a time of 29:55.7. Pat Dupont (30:04.7), Tito Medrano (30:15.1), Steve Murdock (30:21.6) and Steve Weeks (30:23.6) rounded out the men who earned all-region accolades.
On the women’s side, junior Lauren Penney led all SU competitors with a ninth-place finish in the 6k event at 20:20.3. Joining Penney in the top-20 and garnering all-region honors was Catherine DeSarle (20:28.0), Heather Stephens (20:39.6), Katie Hursey (20:43.7) and Natalie Busby (20:44.5).
November 22, 2010 – NCAA Championships | Men's Results | Women's Results | Men's Team Results | Women's Team Results
The Syracuse University cross country team added to its list of impressive accomplishments as it wrapped-up the 2010 season at the NCAA Championship. The women's team secured a program-best 10th place finish in its third trip to nationals, while the men's team matched its 14th place finish from 2009.
The meet, which was hosted by Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind. at LaVern Gibson Championship Course, marked the 15th appearance for the men's program. Junior Pat Dupont led all SU runners across the finish line in the 10k race in 33rd to become SU's 12th All-American with a time of 30:26.0. Syracuse has landed a runner on the All-America list in each of the last two seasons.
In the women's 6k race, senior Catherine DeSarle concluded her career in an Orange uniform with a team-best 50th-place finish, improving 45 spots from last year's championship. Oklahoma State's men's team and Villanova's women's squad each repeated as National Champions.
