Syracuse vs. Princeton
November 21, 2012
Carrier Dome – Syracuse, N.Y.
Opening Statement:
“I thought defensively we played very well. Princeton is a difficult team to play. They’re very patient and they move the ball. They’ve got good ball handlers, good shooters. They shot well. They made some real good shots to keep in the game.
When it got to six, I thought Michael (Carter-Williams) made a couple of good plays on the offensive end and Baye (Keita) made a big block and we got a little run and got back in control.
But Princeton is a very good team. They’re going to be in the tournament. Probably win the Ivy League. They’re smart, they move the ball and they have good shooters.
I thought we did a pretty good job attacking. They change defenses a lot and I thought Michael did a pretty good job of getting the ball to the right people in the right situations.
We weren’t sharp offensively, as sharp as we’d like to be, but James (Southerland) bailed us out early and made a couple big shots in the first half to get us some distance.
I thought the veterans played well. I think of the three inside guys, Baye gives us the best defense. That’s why he’s in there a little bit more. Rakeem (Christmas) is good defensively. You get some teams, if they’re going to play zone, we’re going to play the smaller line-up. James will be in there more with C.J. (Fair) because he gives us another offensive player, another shooter from the perimeter. That’s what we will have to do if we see zone defenses or different kinds of defenses, anyway. We do have that flexibility.
I thought DaJuan (Coleman) was good against them, got good rebound position out there and made good plays. He’s shooting, his foul shots are good, he been shooting the ball well, just a little bit too strong. He’s getting tough, it’s going to take some time, but he’ll get there.
But again our veterans played very well defensively. You force Princeton into 24 turnovers, they probably won’t have 24 turnovers in two games this year, the rest of the year. We did a good job defensively and they’re a very good team and it was a good win.
Can you talk about James’ defense and his improvement?
“Yeah, he ran into some steals, that’s unusual. He’ll try to avoid that next game.”
What does your team need to do to come out sharp offensively in the next game?
“Well I think at this time of the year, you need to get better every game. I think we shot the ball pretty well overall. We didn’t turn it over. We made a few mistakes, but that’s part of early season basketball. And we haven’t seen a lot of zone. And when you see zone sometimes for the first time, I don’t think we attacked it.
A couple of times we did attack it well, got the ball to the right places. And in the end when we needed it, Michael attacked it and we got into the lane. He made a couple really good plays. C.J. finished down low, Baye finished one down there.
We played it alright. You know we always can get better. That’s the whole purpose, you’re going to try and get better all the time. Get our young guys some more experience as much as we can in some game situations as we go through the schedule. The veterans are going to play the most when we get into these games that are going to be close. I think anybody that has ever coached, when you have a veteran forward and a freshman forward, and you’re in a tough game, you’re going to go with the veteran. It doesn’t say that the freshman isn’t good, but you’re going to go with the veteran guy.”
What do you make of Michael’s progress at the point guard through the first three games?
“I think he’s getting better. You know I think he’s still got a lot of work to do, but he’s playing well and getting the ball in the right places. He’s called a couple great plays out there when we needed him. He set James up for a three. Got two buckets for us in the lane when they pulled within six. You know he’s playing extremely well. His defense has been really good. I think both Brandon (Triche) and him have played good defense, and Trevor (Cooney). Our guards have played good defensively out front. That’s good.”
Last year Dion (Waiters) could come off the bench and change the game. In different ways, can James be that guy?
“Well James can certainly do that. He can score, that’s what Dion did. And I think James can score. I think Trevor can give us scoring off the bench. He had good looks tonight. You know he going to have games where he’s not going to make them. But he’ll make his share. I think they’re good guys to have coming off the bench. Baye is a great weapon to have coming in there, playing center for you. We’ve got good balance. C.J. was good tonight in the second half. He struggled early, but kind of got into a little better position in the second half.
Is C.J. struggling to get looks because more teams are paying attention to him?
“Well he doesn’t get as many looks at the three as he did the four. The four was actually better for him. He got more 15-foot and in looks. He getting the ball at 20-feet now and he’s not quite as comfortable there. But he’ll get better.”
Any comments on the realignment?
“I’ll let those people play their games. They’re going to be doing that for the next 20 years. I wish they could just figure it out and get it all done in the next year and then we wouldn’t have to think about it. It’s going to all end up getting done some day, but you think they would be able to figure it out.
Maybe they should just do a draft. Each conference just drafts teams because it doesn’t make sense who they’re getting anyway. So they might as well just have a draft, except then they’d have to make a decision and they probably wouldn’t be able to figure that out.
But eventually they’ll get this thing figured out. They’ll get all the teams moved. They’ll wait a year or two and somebody will take somebody and somebody else will say, well we need to take somebody now. And they’ll take somebody. And then the next month somebody else will take one. And then they’ll wait a couple more years. Someday down the road they’ll get Notre Dame to play. I’ll be long gone by then…long gone.”
A little sad for you to see the rivalries go?
“Everybody knows the story. They’re going for whatever they’re going for. The rivalries don’t matter to anybody anymore. I think if you ask somebody at West Virginia right now, their fans, if they like going out to Texas Tech and Texas A&M and all those places. Ask their fans if they really like that? Maybe they do. I don’t know. I don’t get it, never have got it. But that’s just the way it’s going and nothing you can do about it. It’s like I said, if these guys were running the United States in Colonial times, Brazil and Argentina would be states because they have something we need. It would make a great country.”
