Dr. Edward R. Cuony, 1937 (Football)
Dr. Edward R. Cuony received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1937 from SU. After graduation he went on to New York University to receive a Masters of Arts degree and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology. He did his post-doctoral work at Syracuse University and Cornell University. While he was a student at SU, Dr. Cuony received a varsity letter in football. Cuony served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1941 – 46 as a Commanding Officer of various combat vessels in the North Atlantic, Caribbean and South Pacific. He has taught as a visiting faculty member at several higher education institutions, including University of Arizona, Western Michigan University and Kent State University. Cuony served as a Professor of Education and Head of the Department at Hobart and William Smith Colleges from 1966-80. Since 1980, he has held the distinguished title of Professor of Education Emeritus at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. During his tenure at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Cuony was honored with the Outstanding Teacher Award in 1976. Cuony has been the author of more than 80 articles in educational publications and his reports have appeared in a number of textbooks, professional journals and newspapers such as the New York Times. He is a lifetime member of the Varsity Club and is an active member in the Rochester Area Alumni Club.
