Jim Boeheim Quotes
Opening Statement:
“I thought this was a game that we just did not attack their zone. I mean, we play against it every day, you’d think we could attack it. We did not attack it well. We couldn’t really make much until Kris [Joseph] bailed us out. He made some shots for us; nobody else was really comfortable and didn’t look comfortable shooting the ball. C.J. [Fair] got some good looks that he usually makes, he just couldn’t make them. We really struggled offensively. We haven’t seen a lot of zone but that’s not a good excuse. We did attack it better at the end, but Kris still was the only guy that looked like he wanted it and that he was going to shoot it.
This was a game they got on the boards from the beginning and that’s just a disaster for us. Getting 17 less rebounds, this was a disaster game as far as I’m concerned. I’m very disappointed at this stage of the year to get beat like that on the boards. You can miss shots; that’s part of the game, but we’ve got to find a way to rebound the ball better. Some of them are long bounces but we just have to do a better job rebounding the basketball. There is just no excuse the way we are rebounding right now. It’s a team effort; it’s everybody, it’s not one guy. Right now, I don’t think we’re a good basketball team because we can’t rebound. For a long time this year, we were within a couple, two or three rebounds, I don’t think I was concerned about rebounding that much. But when it gets to 10, 15, 20, you better be concerned. Right now, we’re just not a rebounding team. I think that’s something that we will see what we can do about it.
We’re winning the turnover battle every game, winning the steals most games, the blocked shots; we’re winning all those battles. But we’ve got to do a better job on the boards. If we want to be a high quality team, we have to do a better job on the boards. We hit a couple of shots at the end, a couple key plays when we were down or this game could have gotten away. And the only conversation would be about the rebounding. When you win everybody forgets about it. But the only reason we won this game is because we hit a couple of shots late, our defense was good late, but there’s just no excuse for us to rebound the way we rebounded tonight. It’s just not championship level and it won’t win. We just won’t win if we can’t rebound better than that. Period.”
How did Fab Melo perform tonight?
“Well he’s got to save us with some blocks in there and he did a couple times tonight. But, we’ve just got to do better defensively. Even St. John’s shot 40 percent from the three and 45 percent from the field and they don’t shoot well against anybody.”
What can you say about the team’s penetration?
“Well, we moved the ball, we penetrated, Scoop [Jardine] had a good second half got in the lane, made some plays, Deion [Waiters] kicked it out. We finally made some good plays on the offensive end, but we need to start rebounding. You can’t get a fast break if you can’t rebound.”
What was the difference in Kris Joseph’s play tonight?
“Well, yesterday was the first day that I can remember in a long time that he made some shots in practice, so I was hoping that would be a good sign. He started out, he missed a couple, then he hit a couple and got his rhythm going.”
What was the difference in Scoop Jardine’s play in the second half?
“I thought he was making plays rather than trying to make a shot. I thought he made some plays in the second half; he got five or six assists and was trying to get in the lane making plays. His offense wasn’t good the whole night. Deion’s [Waiters] offense and Scoop’s [Jardine] offense just wasn’t good as far as putting the ball into the basket. But I thought Scoop got us into our offense, got us in some sets. He’s really the only point guard that gets us into plays and gets us into sets and makes plays. He’s going to make a bad play once in awhile but he makes good plays. We need that, we need him doing that.”
How would you compare Fab Melo to former C Rick Jackson?
“I’d say he’s [Fab Melo] just a little bit better shot blocker. Not as good of a rebounder but a better shot blocker.”
