Outside Competition
Bylaw 17.02.9 defines outside competition as an athletics competition against any
other athletics team (including an alumni team) that does not represent the intercollegiate
athletics program of the same institution.
In sports other than basketball, student-athletes who participate during the
academic year as a member of any outside team in any noncollegiate, amateur competition
becomes ineligible for intercollegiate competition unless eligibility is restored by the Committee
on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. (14.6.1)
However, It is permissible for a student-athlete to participate in outside competition
as an individual during the academic year in the student-athlete’s sport, as long as the
student-athlete represents only himself or herself in the competition and does not engage in
such competition as a member of or receive expenses from an outside team. (14.6.1.7).
For example, if a student-athlete were to compete with an outside team, wearing
the team’s uniform and using the team equipment, it would likely not be permissible. However,
if a student-athlete were to compete as an unaffi liated individual, paying for his or her
own entry fees, uniforms, equipment, etc. it would likely be permissible.
As a reminder, all student-athletes must receive permission from the Office of Athletic
Compliance prior to competing in any kind of outside competition.
