The NCAA prohibits representative of a member institution’s
athletic interests from serving as “sponsors” or “foster families”
to student-athletes, since such an arrangement would constitute
an extra benefi t unless the sponsorship program exists to provide
the same benefi ts and supportive services to all students at the
institution.
However, it is permissible for an institutional staff member or
representative of its athletics interest to provide an occasional
family home meal to student-athletes. The committee noted that
the reference to “an occasional family home meal” would in
itself restrict such meals to infrequent and special occasions and
would require that the meal be provided in an individual’s home.
The committee also noted specifi cally that a student-athlete
would be permitted to receive a family home meal on Thanksgiving
or Christmas in accordance with this interpretation.
There is only 1 Educational Column specifi cally mentioning
Thanksgiving on LSDBI.
