DEFENSIVE LINE
Return to 2013 Football Preview
Syracuse’s defense has benefitted from disrupting linemen the last few seasons. Two years ago it was tall defensive end Chandler Jones, who now starts for the New England Patriots. Last year Brandon Sharpe created havoc in opponents’ backfields to the tune of 15 tackles for loss, including seven quarterback sacks.
In 2013, defensive line coach Tim Daoust can count on a consistent contribution from senior defensive tackle Jay Bromley, who has been a starter the past two seasons. Sophomore John Raymon, who transferred from Iowa a year ago, has switched from end to tackle to support Bromley, along with two redshirt freshmen – Marcus Coleman and Josh Manley.
At nose tackle, junior Eric Crume is expected to replace Deon Goggins, with competition coming from senior Zian Jones and sophomore Ryan Sloan.
Junior Robert Welsh has logged field team in 23 games over the past two years and should take over at one defensive end post. Sophomore Ron Thompson made the offseason switch from tight end to defensive end. Two transfers – Pasadena City Community College product Tyler Marona and junior Trevon Trejo, a transfer from Golden West College (Ca.) -- are quality reserves. Junior Kennedy Kodua made the roster as a walk-on prior to 2013 spring practice.
Junior Micah Robinson, who started against Stony Brook in 2012, has emerged at the other defensive end slot. He will be pushed by junior Lucas Albrecht and freshman Isiah Johnson from Eastern Christian Academy (Md.).
