SECONDARY
Return to 2013 Football Preview
Fred Reed is the new defensive backs coach for the Orange. He joins the staff after working for Frank Solich at Ohio.
While the SU secondary only loses one starter, the hole is a large one to fill. Shamarko Thomas, the club’s top tackler in 2012, leaves a void at strong safety. The rest of the defensive backs who saw action last fall are back in the fold.
Senior cornerback Keon Lyn, who was with the first unit for 10 contests last year, is slated at the starter with sophomore Julian Whigham behind him. Ri’Shard Anderson started all 13 games at the other cornerback slot and returns for his senior season. Junior Brandon Reddish , who started the first three games at one cornerback spot and played in 12 games, will push Anderson. Senior special-teams expert Joe Nassib, sophomores Jaston George and Eric Jackson, and freshman Chauncey Scissum, a first-team all-state performer from Rush-Henrietta High School, are other cornerback candidates.
Senior Jeremi Wilkes ranked fifth on last year’s squad in tackles. He has played in all 35 games of his career and is back at free safety with sophomore Wayne Morgan behind him. Junior Darius Kelly, a transfer from Pima Community College (Ariz.) will battle for time. Sophomore Durell Eskridge looks like the favorite at strong safety. He’ll be pushed by junior Ritchy Desir.
