Volleyball Student-Athlete Alexia Tsairis

Alexia Tsairis, a Syracuse volleyball player, died aboard Pan Am Flight 103, when it was blown up by a terrorist bomb over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988. A native of Franklin Lakes, N.J., Tsairis was a junior at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications spending the fall semester studying photojournalism at the Syracuse University London Center. A two-year letterwinner in volleyball, Tsairis was a defensive specialist for the Orange.
“Alexia contributed to the team’s success with her skills, determination and competitive spirit,” said Tsairis’ head coach Dan Schulte, who was the Orange leader from 1986 through 1994. “Her teammates bonded to her not only because of her love of volleyball, but for her feverish love of life. Her spirit was a precious gift that I and the members of the team will always cherish.”
The Alexis Tsairis Memorial Award was given annually to the Syracuse volleyball team’s leading defensive player. Statistical data, along with a demonstrated competitive attitude, determines the recipient each year.
