Syracuse Men’s Basketball
Syracuse vs. LeMoyne
November 2, 2015
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
LeMoyne Head Coach- Patrick Beilein
Opening Statement
“I thought we played a very good first half. We made shots and in the second half, Coach Boeheim made great adjustments. They started driving the ball ahead a little bit, especially with (Trevor) Cooney and we just couldn’t stay in front. One of the things we’re going to continue to work on is guarding your individual man as we progress with the season. Syracuse is a very talented team. Love their freshman, I love (Michael) Gbinijie and what they’re bringing and they’re obviously extremely good at their zone. I thought it was a great learning experience for us and we’re going to take this game and continue to move on, get to the NE-10 schedule. We’ve got another tough one Friday, so we’re looking forward to it though, as a team.”
You’ve seen high level competition from your various stops, what impressed you most about Syracuse?
“How active they are within the zone. I have not seen it in person in a long time and their ability they have to read the passing games. They almost cheat a little bit on the wings. It’s very impressive. So the feel and how they work at that is, I think a credit to Coach Boeheim and the staff on how they do that. (They are) just active and they make plays defensively and that leads a lot of their offense.”
What did you think about how you’re guys hung in there? The first half was pretty good, probably is it a positive for you guys moving forward?
“Yeah, it almost got away from us early on in that first half and we did a good job battling back. Zach Quattro came off the bench and came back with two three’s, kind of gave us a little lift. I was happy with how we played. I think we were tied at half rebounding wise. I mean our turnovers were only at eight the first half, which is pretty good. I believe we ended at 21, and that was kind of the difference of the game. The second half turned the game. They got a few run outs and things like that we didn’t execute.”
As you transition to now Friday, what’s on your mind beyond the X’s and O’s and the work you have to get done? Have you thought about what that’s going to mean?
“I was asked that question earlier today, and I think I’m going to take a step back, you know when I do walk out and get ready to shake my dad’s hand and kind of realize how cool this moment will be, of coaching against him. Not to many father-sons get to coach against each other in any profession and so this will be a moment out there. It might be half of a second but I’m going to think about it and really take that in. We’re just going to go up there and battle and I think we’ll learn more regardless of the outcome since we’re similar styles offensively, that when we watch film we’ll be able to show our guys -- this is what we mean, we want you to cut like this -- and I think those are going to be huge learning points for us.”
