Coach Boeheim Quotes - Boston College
Syracuse Men’s Basketball
Syracuse vs. Boston College
January 13, 2016
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Head Coach Jim Boeheim
Opening statement:
“DaJuan (Coleman) did a good job on the post so that limited their post touches and I thought overall, our defense was good. We let (Eli) Carter have two early (3-pointers) and then we figured out that we didn’t want him to shoot anymore.
“I thought offensively, we got good shots. We have to make those shots if we’re going to be successful, wide open looks at the 3-point line. We made probably four or five bad turnovers that we can’t make and at this stage of the season we shouldn’t be making those turnovers. There’s plenty to look at and think about in this game and work on.
“I thought Tyler Roberson was really active. Malachi (Richardson) had a very, very good second half and Michael (Gbinije) was just steady the whole game. Again, if we make two or three of those threes it’s a different game right away. When we shoot 4-for-17 from the three, we’re going to be fortunate to win those games and those situations. When you haven’t won, it’s always tough to get that win. We’ve got a tremendous challenge facing us now and we’ll get ready for that starting tomorrow.”
After the timeout around 13:50 you didn’t take many threes, was that something you told the team?
“No, not really. Just told them to keep playing defense and get into the lane. We wanted to get into the lane a little bit, get into the basket area. We’re going to shoot threes if they’re there, if they’re open; they were all open, they were all pretty good looks tonight.”
Why do you think DaJuan Coleman was better on the post tonight?
“He did a good job. (Dennis) Clifford is a strong guy. He’s not really mobile and he just stayed with him, near him. He did a good job with him.”
You mentioned it can be tough to get that win but do you think it took a little pressure of these guys?
“I don’t know. You’re a basketball player, you’re used to playing; I don’t think they worry about it. I think they’re just not playing good enough to win. I don’t think it’s because of the pressure, I think we haven’t been good enough. We have to get better; we have to play better. Some games it’s defense, couple games it might have been a little bit of rebounding, couple games turnovers, couple games not making shots. There are different reasons, there’s no one reason. Everyone has been worried about our rebounds. We never beat anybody and we’ve been even on the boards for a while. We can get out-rebounded and still win, that’s not an issue, but we have to shoot better and we can’t turn it over. Not like we did tonight -- unforced errors. (We) made two or three of those against North Carolina that were crucial. We don’t have enough margin to do that.”
You mentioned that tremendous challenge coming up, obviously the Saturday and Monday road trip, what’s that going to be like?
“We knew the schedule was tough and there’s nothing we can do about it, we just have to go play it. Every game is tough and those are certainly going to be tough too but every game you play in this league is tough. We’re not playing well enough to get accomplished what we want to get accomplished and hopefully we can do that, get better, but right now we’re not.”
