Coach Boeheim North Carolina Quotes
Syracuse Men’s Basketball
Syracuse vs. North Carolina
January 9, 2016
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Head Coach Jim Boeheim
Opening Statement:
“We gave a great effort. I thought we did a good job on the boards, I thought we moved the ball. We got good opportunities. A couple times in the first half – the last six minutes – our forwards didn’t do their jobs defensively. We didn’t get back in and we gave up layups that we hadn’t given up the whole game. In the last six, seven minutes you have to make those plays and we didn’t make them. North Carolina, obviously a great team, but we did more than enough to be in good position tonight but we made the same defensive breakdown about five times. The forwards didn’t get back in, and we gave up layups and you can’t do that and win. It was a great effort but it was a poor defensive effort in the last seven or eight minutes of the game. There is no excuse for that. We have to do better in those situations, and we will go back to work starting tomorrow and try to get better there.”
How will the team respond after a slow start in ACC play?
“We have to get this thing fixed. We’re going to try. There’s 14 games left to go. There’s a long way to go. We’ve started 0-4 one year and we won 10 games that year in the league. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us.”
What did Trevor Cooney do to get open for shots?
“Just moving, getting good areas, good openings. He’s capable of that. I thought we screened a little better for him. We have to continue to do that. He just played with a lot of confidence. He played great tonight.”
Offensively what has been the problem since you’ve entered conference play?
“Part of our problem was our offensive movement wasn’t too great in the last few games and we missed shots. We have to make shots. We made some tonight and that kept us in the game. The second part of the problem is we have to get stops and we did not do that. In the first half we did. In the second half we did not. We have to be able to do that.”
Why has Tyler Lydon’s offensive efficiency decreased since the start of the season?
“He’s a freshman. He’s just trying to feel his way around. He’s just not quite ready yet, physically. I think he’s doing a good job, but he’s just not quite ready yet. He got off to such an unbelievable start, in the tournament, because people basically didn’t know who he was and they let him shoot and he hit shots. He’ll get there. He has work to do but he’ll get better as time goes on.”
Were you pleased with the way the team rebounded?
“We outrebounded one of the better rebounding teams in the country tonight. From a team perspective, we have to get our guards back there. Trevor (Cooney) and Mike (Gbinije) had 11 rebounds. That’s what they have to do.”
What does Michael Gbinije have to do when he’s struggling offensively?
“He just has to keep playing. The shot looks good. It was there. The ball just didn’t go in. You miss six threes and it’s not going to be a good ending, offensively.”
