Opening Statement:
“I thought that, overall, we made some defensive mistakes early and they knocked down shots. We did a little better job tightening up defensively. Offensively, Tyler Roberson was really active and the guards played really well. Frank (Howard) and John (Gillon) got them the ball and I think they had 15 assists. I thought they played exceptionally well.
“We didn’t do a good job on the boards. We have to rebound the ball better, especially when you have a size advantage. We have to take advantage of that and we didn’t, but I think we had a good stretch in the middle (of the first half) and in the start of the second half.
“At the end, they went zone. We weren’t really seeing the zone. We were not very good at the end, but overall, it’s our first time and first real game. I’m happy to get it and get back to work tomorrow to work on trying to get a little better.”
What did you see from Frank (Howard) as far as shooting from the perimeter?
“He’s made two three’s. When he makes jump shots, it’s a lot easier game. But he’s always been good getting to the basket, he’s a good passer, and he knocked down a couple shots. And again, with Frank (Howard) and Johnny (Gillon), both played really well.”
How impressed were you with Tyler Roberson tonight?
“He had a good start. Frank (Howard) set him up really good, really early, got him a couple of baskets. That’s where he is effective – in that area. He was very good, early.”
Was it all about being active for Tyler Roberson?
“It’s different things. It’s not one thing. You have to be active – that’s for sure one thing that’s important for him. I think the guards did a really good job of getting him into good situations and he’s a good finisher when he gets to the basket.”
Did Frank Howard work on something specific over the summer to improve his shot?
“He got stronger. He’s a different player. He’s put on a lot of weight and a lot of strength. He is a much more physical and stronger player than he was last year. He was a good passer last year and when you’re more of a threat to score, that helps your passing. He’s just a stronger player and he’s shooting better.”
How much did it help to have two guys like John Gillon and Andrew White, on the press?
“It’s important for those guys to play well. It helps everybody. I think Andrew (White) did some good things tonight, he got to the basket better. Tyus (Battle) has been playing great. He had some shots tonight he just didn’t make them, but I thought that, again, if two guys have 15 assists, that’s good. They didn’t play together for much more than a minute or two – one had 22, the other had 21 – so that’s a lot of assists out of one position, basically, and they scored more as well (together).“
How was Tyler Lydon on offense?
“He’s not making any shots. When he is at the three, he’s a little too far from the basket. He is more effective when he is around the basket or if he gets shots. He isn’t getting a lot of good looks out there. He has a little guy guarding him. I think we should have done a better job at getting him to the basket and I think he has to rebound and get on the offensive boards a little better. And when he gets there, he has to finish and pass it out for a jump shot. He has to finish those down there. But he is a good shooter and if he shoots it, he will be fine.”
Is Tyler Roberson one of the guys you’re looking to for rebounding more?
“I think both of those guys need to rebound a little more – they have to get on the boards. There’s no question about that. I mean they had terrible rebounds tonight. Some of them are long rebounds, which happens and is really the guards' fault, not getting back there on some of them, but they are both better than that.”
