Postgame Quotes
Coach Boeheim’s Opening Statement:
“When you place against zones and shoot the ball that well, it makes the game a lot easier. Andrew (White III) got started and then everybody made a couple. I thought the biggest difference early is that we missed shots but we got the offensive glass and then made three or four offensive rebound baskets and we didn’t have to rely on just making shots. I thought our defense was good. We are still making adjustments on where we are going to get the shooters but it was an improvement over the first game so that’s good.”
Do you think Lydon got closer to the basket to create offense?
“Well he got on the boards early -- that was the difference. He got two easy baskets early and he got in the right position. Tyler Roberson hit a few jumpers early and they were letting him shoot it and that’s the worst nightmare when you let a guy shoot and he makes them. Bad luck.”
What did you see from Andrew White tonight?
“Andrew was geared up tonight. He was ready to go. He’s a shooter and he was focused in. Obviously, that’s what he does. He was really good."
“Our guards were good. Really good. John (Gillon) had nine assists in 18 minutes, which is pretty good.”
Do you think Paschal Chukwu made good strides defensively?
“It’s going to be a work in progress. He has a long way to go. We just have to be patient with him. It will take a while.”
John Gillon and Frank Howard are so different in terms of how they play and how you use them. How does that help the team?
“Well they’re both good players. They both can score, they both can get into the lane, and they both are pretty good passers. They’re both good players. Really good players.”
How much does it open up the offense when you shoot 52% from three?
“It makes it an easy game. When you don’t, it's a hard game and we are going to have those games and those nights. We are going to have to will our way through it. The good news tonight was that when we missed three or four, we got the ball back and put it in. Even though we missed four shots, we had a 10-point lead because we got four offensive rebounds.
“Teams zone you just like we know. They zone you and push up on guys, so you’re going to get rebound position inside. That’s what you give up. We just were in good places early. The second half we were in good places and the ball bounced a little funny. That happens. You can’t depend on offensive rebounds, but you try to and you try to go get them.”
Would you say that Andrew White makes the difference between your team being a good team and a very good team?
“I don't know. We have other guys. We have guys that can shoot, but we are happy that we have him here. He’s a good player. You can’t have too many good players.”
Does Andrew White give you a dimension that you didn’t have before signing him, specifically in terms of 3-point shooting?
“Well obviously he’s a good shooter but Tyler Lydon is as well. Frank (Howard) is shooting the ball well from the three. I think John (Gillon) is shooting it well from the three. You can’t rely on one guy anyway. There are good teams that will take that guy away, so you need other people. He’s a good player and he’s just a very good shooter.”
Do you expect a guy like John Gillon, because he’s a veteran, to fit in seamlessly?
“We work hard every day. He works hard every day in practice. He’s a good player. These teams can’t defend us, so we have to wait. These games don’t count for that as far as that goes. We set our schedule up and we have a very difficult schedule. We will learn some things as we go through that schedule. We’ve got too many shooters, so for teams to zone us is very difficult. These teams have to zone us because they don’t have a choice.”
Taurean Thompson obviously has an advanced post-game for a freshman. What are some things you still want him to work on?
“He’s really good in the low-post. From the high-post on down, he’s very good.”
What’s the next step for Tyus Battle in terms of development down the road?
“Just keep playing. He’s a good player. He just needs to keep playing and keep working on it. He’s a very good player. We need to play and we have a lot of games before we make any judgments about anything.
"We have a lot of work to do. Mistakes don’t show in games like this, but they’re there. We just have to keep working really hard. There is a long way to go.”
Do you feel compromised at all when Lydon has to play center?
“No, I’m probably happier when he’s at center. It doesn’t matter where he plays, he’s a good player. There aren’t many like that.”
Where is the team defensively with all of the new faces coming in?
“We’ve got a lot of work to do on everything, not just one thing. It’s a completely different type of defensive. When you see a team get open shots like what happened tonight, that’s just an understanding of the defense and the rotation. If you keep doing that and find a good team, it’s going to cost you big time. But, that’s normal. We put five new guys in so we have a lot to work on. Last year we put one and a half new guys in so it’s different. We’ve never had that many new faces. It’ll take a while to do everything that we want to do but that’s to be expected.”
