Syracuse vs. Monmouth

Carrier Dome | Syracuse, N.Y.
Andrew White III, Gr. St., G
Were you surprised by the margin of 21 points against a team that is pretty good?
“I knew we were capable of doing that. If we did our job, we could have a game like we did tonight, with the zone being our staple. Once we capitalized on errors from previous games, coming into this game, we were more prepared for what was going on and we knew our spots better. It was time for us to put together a complete zone.”
As someone on the outside of the zone, how helpful is it to know that you have a 7’2” guy behind you cleaning some stuff up?
“I talk to him a lot usually when I’m on the floor, trying to funnel guys to him. (Paschal) Chukwu is still young and hasn’t been playing basketball long, but I think he has a higher ceiling than anybody on this team. In another year or two – Taurean Thompson also – those guys are going to be the best frontcourt players in the country. He’s learning on the court and getting minutes and that’s a good thing. Look for him to be really good this season”
Frank Howard, So., G
This was your first big test of the season. How do you feel you guys did?
“I think we did either a B- or C+ work. I think, offensively, we were pretty bad when it came to just getting the ball. We were stagnant. We didn’t do as many things as we’ve practiced. We didn’t hit as many shots -- so we had to change things up a little and defend like that.”
Were you surprised at the margin of victory by 21 points?
“I’m not surprised, not to say they aren’t a great team. I think the zone made them work a little harder, and I think we just played good defense on them.”
John Gillon, R-Sr., G
Taurean Thompson had 10 points in 11 minutes and, in the second half, he scored and came down hurt. How do you think his play tonight affected the team?
“He is very talented. He has a few things to improve on and we have a great coaching staff. I think he is going to be one of the best players in the nation.”
Tyler Roberson, Sr., F
There was a stretch where Frank (Howard) came in and shot the ball more and had a jumper from 12 feet and 19 feet. What did you see in that stretch in the second half?
“Frank came in and played really well. I think that all of us played really well. We had great chemistry offensively. Everyone has been playing together well.”
And what did you think of DaJuan (Coleman)?
“He played really well. He rebounded well and when he didn’t finish, he got to the foul line and made those.”
At one point they had four guards in the game? How did this affect the team’s play?
“Our zone was a little extended. We weren’t shocked that they were going to do that. We did a good job of knowing what they were going to do and played really productively against that.”
Tyler Lydon, So., F
It seems that they took more shots and, at one point, had four guys out and one big in the middle. Is that hard to defend in the zone?
“As long as we are playing the right zone and we know where they are, it is fine. We were able to get good stops. We pride ourselves on defense and offensively, we weren’t worried about that.”
