Coach Boeheim Opening Statement
“Right now we’re just making too many mistakes, things you just can’t do when you get in tough games. You have to be able to take care of the ball and make plays, and obviously make some free throws when you have to have them. We’re just not doing enough things right to win the game right now.”
What are some things recurring consistently that are problems?
“We’re just not playing well at the guard spot I don’t think at all. We’re not getting the ball in the basket from the guard spot -- haven’t in any of the four losses. We’ve got to play better there. Tyus (Battle) didn’t practice all week. He was cleared yesterday. He practiced a little bit yesterday; I really did not want to use him even though he was cleared because he hadn’t practiced. It wasn’t in rhythm for him to play today but we had to try something. We gave him a shot out there. If Tyler Lydon doesn’t have an unbelievable game we lose by 15. That’s about what it probably should have been.”
Was it good to see Tyler Lyndon take more shots?
“Yeah he was great today. He played a fabulous game.”
How do you assess the transition game today?
“Guards are just not making plays. We’re making turnovers. You get advanced situations and we can’t make a play. We can’t make a layup or we walk. You have to play better.”
Is there anything in particular that Tyler Lydon has been lacking before today?
“He was aggressive, I thought. He had an unbelievable game. It was tremendous inside, outside, post ups. Everything he did was great. He played great basketball today. But one guy can’t do it. We’re not getting play out of enough guys.”
Did they (Georgetown) play any differently after halftime?
“No I think they moved the ball about the same. They made a couple shots, but I thought our defense was a little bit better in the first half. They got plus-11 on the boards. First half we were pretty even. I thought we did a pretty good job. Second half we didn’t do as good a job on the boards. We have to get more help on the boards from our guards. When we want to score points, we go with a little smaller team to try to score, but that hurts our rebounding a little bit. Our guards have simply have to play better, that’s all.”
Obviously, its not the end to the weekend you wanted, but can you talk about the weekend as a whole with the celebration of Pearl Washington?
“We just wanted to make sure Pearl was honored. He was and we are just happy we could do that. We’ve had a lot of supporters, a lot of people, and it was good to be able to do that.”
