Frank Howard, So., G
Where does the team go from here?
“Hopefully, up. Up is the only way we can go from now. I don’t think you get any worse than this. I feel like we have this conversation a lot, about what we have to do. We are going to figure it out. That’s all I can say.”
Tell me when this game got out of hand?
“It occurred from the beginning. We didn’t defend right. Having to bring the ball down against a set defense every time is pretty difficult for anybody, especially when you want to play an up-tempo kind of pace. But, I would say from the beginning when we gave up those 3’s to #20.”
What was coach’s message after the game?
“No, he’s not out there playing. He’s a coach, he has to say that. He’s not out there playing, he’s not out there giving up 3’s, giving up rebounds. It’s not on him, it’s on us. It’s solely on us. He’s been doing this for a long time. It’s on us.”
What was the difference between tonight and Monday?
“A different team. When you are not playing the right way, sometimes you can get away with it and sometimes you can’t. When you play against somebody that can defend you, that’s the difference. We need to figure some things out.”
Do you think three games in five days hurt you at all?
“No. I’m not going to make an excuse for us. None of us are going to make an excuse.”
Tyler Lydon, So., F
Coach said this one is on him. What is the player’s reaction?
“Everything is on us. He told us exactly what was going to be happening and we just weren’t able to execute.”
Why did you struggle to find it tonight?
“We weren’t paying too much attention to detail and we weren’t able to execute. That’s it.”
Coach sort of threw his hands up in the air and said “I don’t know what the fix is.” How do you approach that?
“We just got to want to play and want to win. I don’t know.”
You are one of the leaders, even though you are only a sophomore. Do you look at this as a rallying point, where you can be one of the leaders going forward?
“Yes. Absolutely. I got to start talking to guys. Get everybody together and get us back on track.”
Does it help you guys to get away for a couple days?
“I’m not sure. I think everyone in this locker room will be thinking about basketball. After a loss like that, it doesn’t feel good at all. I don’t really know how you could forget about it and not think about basketball, but that’s just me.”
John Gillion, Gr., G
Coach said it was all on him and he didn’t get you guys ready, what are you guys thinking?
“I mean it’s not him. He gave us a game plan we didn’t execute. We were supposed to take away the high post defensively and we didn’t. We didn’t do a good job in not letting them take easy shots.”
He is a hall of fame coach saying I don’t know what is going to happen, how do you guys take that?
“I feel like we will go up from here. We’ll try to start a new season in conference play. We’ll try to stay positive in a time like this. It’ll start clicking I think.”
Do you think ACC play will make up for these games?
“Yes, definitely. That’s the good thing about playing in a conference like that. You can get some big wins going forward. We can’t take it lightly, we have to come back from this little break we are getting and be stronger”
Andrew White III, Gr., G
Coach blamed this on himself, what do think of that?
“We know how to play basketball; maybe our coaches will go out and tweak some things. It is up to us to go out and get the win. You have to be determined, you have to play hard, you have to do things to put yourself in the position to win, which is way outside of what the coaches can do. I think that our practices are going to be very spirited and our spirits will be high. I think that will be started from our coaches and leaders.”
I know it’s tough, but how do you rally yourself?
“I think we have a lot of guys that are not extra emotional people. I think that shows in worse light. For example, for me, I had that same body language tonight that I had on our team’s best game. I think we have a lot of guys who are at the temperament. I think that speaks to the personalities of this team. The only thing that makes us dispirited is the scoreboard, and that is just something we have to correct with our play.”
