Syracuse vs. Florida State
January 28, 2017
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Andrew White III, Gr. St., G
Does this win serve as a turning point for the team?
“You never want to get too comfortable, especially playing in the ACC. We’ve got a good team waiting for us next week, and we have something we need to prove to people on the road. It’s two wins, much needed, so we’re going to enjoy these, but hopefully we can use these to keep in the right direction. I think that’s more so the focus than anything.”
Florida State cut the lead from 18 to two in the second half but you guys weathered the storm. What does that say about this team?
“We knew that they were going to throw a hard punch in that second half. You look around their roster, they have four or five really good players on the court so it was just a matter of when. Big players make plays and that’s what they did. But we have some guys who were very poised down the stretch and were able to make plays for our team.”
What does getting a win against a top 10 team do for you guys moving forward?
“It’s big obviously because it’s a resume booster, but more importantly, it’s a win in the ACC, which puts us in the positive for right now. You want to take every win and every good game to propel you as far forward as possible and I think this will give us the most momentum possible going into a tough road test that we’re going to face. I say this week to week, the momentum shifts are so drastic so hopefully we’ll keep this one in the right direction.”
Tyus Battle, Fr., G
Florida State is a very tough team. Was there a concerted effort towards rebounding today?
“We tried to crash the boards on the offensive and defensive glass.”
You guys did a lot of intangible things today. How do those intangible things help you win?
“To get a win like this, it’s about the little things. You hustle, get rebounds, get loose balls and stuff like that. You just have to want it more than the other team and we did that today.”
What did you think of John Gillon getting into the lane today and getting you guys lots of open shots?
“John did a great job getting to the basket on the flat screen, getting guys in the lane. We got layups in the lane and some great shots, so John did a great job for us.”
John Gillion, Gr. St., G
You guys are always confident, but what does this win do for you guys moving forward?
“It makes us even more confident, knowing what we can do when we play together and when we play well. Seeing what we can do at our highest level is big for us. To beat FSU shows us where we could be.”
How much of a difference did getting in and making plays out of the lane play for you guys today?
“I feel like I can always get in the lane. That first man is never a problem, but sometimes the help gets set and it’s tough for me to make plays. But I felt like there were a few gaps today that I was able to expose.”
What helped you create so many shots today?
“I’ve had to rewire how I think coming here because I’ve always got in the lane and dumped it off to a big. But I’m playing with the best shooters I’ve ever played with, so when I’m driving I’m thinking that Andrew (White III) over there and that’s Tyus (Battle) over there shooting a very high percentage – so that’s three right there.”
