Opening statement:
“Our defense was better tonight. We gave up some open threes, but we did a better job. It wasn’t as good as we need to do, but we did a better job and we were more efficient on offense. Their man-to-man is very good. We established that lead and they went zone and we missed our first three threes. They got back in. Then, Andrew (White III) hit a couple and Tyler (Lydon) hit one and he hit one in the high post. We got a little separation. Andrew’s shot – we haven’t had one of those, that’s kind of lucky, where it went up and came back down. We’ve seen that against us, but we haven’t had it. That was nice.
“I thought the difference was our defense was better and more active. John (Gillon) I thought settled down at the point. He made some errors, but he made a lot of good plays. I think one thing about that position, when you’re hesitating or when you’re thinking about the other guy coming in – I think that’s what one of our problems has been. I think we have to go with somebody there for a while.
"I thought Andrew was really good. He rebounded, he shot it and he made plays. Obviously, Tyler Lydon and Tyus (Battle) was very good. Our defense, we started slow but we got better on the defensive end. That’s where we’re going to have to continue to improve if we’re going to get anywhere.”
What was the reason for the defense being better tonight?
“They were a little more active. You have to be active, and I thought we were more active than we’ve been. I think the combination of our offense being better and our defense, obviously it helps – but we need both of those things. Neither has been good, but defense has probably been the worst part. We’ve got a long way to go and we have a lot of work to do. This was a very good first step, but it was just one step.”
What did you think about the crowd tonight?
“The crowd was great. The crowd has been good all year, but I thought they were really good tonight.”
What was the key to the offensive efficiency tonight?
“Our concern was their man-to-man was very good. They have haven’t played hardly any zone this year. We’ve been pretty good against the zone, so when they went zone I was fairly happy but then we miss three in a row. It happens. We could have lost our confidence there, but we didn’t. We kept looking to shoot it. Tyler (Lydon) made a couple of plays inside. Offensively, we were just a little more aware of what we were trying to do. We tried to get Tyler Lydon low a couple of times. We tried to get Andrew a couple of shots. We tried to get John some pick-and-rolls so that he could get in the lane. We caught them switching a couple of times and we got a mismatch. I thought we did well and that’s what you have to do.”
