Student-Athletes Quotes - Miami
Syracuse Men’s Basketball
Syracuse vs. Miami
January 4, 2017
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Andrew White III, Gr., Guard
What got into you guys tonight?
“We just finally did what we all thought we could. It was good to look up when the game was over and see you have a convincing win against a really good basketball team. This is one down and many to go. We have a really good team waiting for us a couple days down the road so we have to ice up and get ready for Pittsburgh.”
What contributed to the improved defensive play?
“I think everybody just had energy. I know our guards and myself watched some extra tape with Coach G-Mac (Gerry McNamara) and that helped us a little bit more because we were locked in better to personnel, so I know I will ask him for that again. And its human nature, when your back is against the wall, you either lay down and die or you come out fighting. It was good to see that from our team.”
Tyus Battle, Fr., Guard
What do you think was different tonight?
“We just played to get the win. We didn’t worry about our individual stats or anything like that. We flew around on defense, closed on shooters and crashed the boards.”
How difficult has it been for this team to come together and gel?
“It’s tough for any new team. We have five new guys that play a lot so that’s going to be tough to learn the offense and the defense, especially when everyone is coming from different areas and places. It takes time. Tonight was much better.”
What can you say about the defense tonight?
“Energy. I think that was the key thing tonight. We flew around everywhere. We limited drives. That is how the zone is effective. Over past years, guys have had a ton of energy on defense and offense, so that was the key thing tonight.”
Tyler Lydon, So., Forward
What was the difference tonight?
“The season – it hasn’t gone the way we planned. We haven’t played the way we wanted to. It just came down to everybody holding each other accountable, going out and playing hard.”
There seemed to be a fire lit under the team. Did you guys instill that or work on that at practice?
“Absolutely. We come to practice every day to work and try to get better. With that being said, I think we were able to accomplish that and it showed today. We just have to keep working hard and move forward.”
Can you talk about the defense tonight?
“Defense was great. There were times where we had a few mental lapses. But other than that, I think everyone played really hard, made the right rotations and it shows what we can do. We just have to keep playing like that.”
