Coach Boeheim Quotes
Syracuse vs. Southern New Hampshire

Carrier Dome | Syracuse, N.Y.
Head Coach Jim Boeheim
Opening Statement:
“We didn’t have enough movement offensively. There was a little too much reliance on the jump shot. The strong point right now, I think we can make shots, but we don’t want to have to start out that way. We didn’t make hustle plays. We didn’t rebound and when that happens we aren’t working.”
“They did a good job defensively, staying off us. They’re a good rebounding team. They were a really good rebounding team last year, and they all do a good job there.”
“I think our press did ok. We got some turnovers, but we also messed up a little bit. We’re making some bad mistakes offensively. There are bunch of things we need to correct as we move along. It’s still early, but there are some mistakes that we really can’t afford to make.”
“We aren’t shooting it really well right now. Tyus (Battle) was struggling a little bit shooting the ball, but he’s been shooting it well in practice, so I think that will change. The biggest disappointment in the first half, we got outrebounded a few times because we didn’t go after the ball. But then in the second half we outrebounded them by, I think, 14. It’s a matter of effort. I think with young guys, they don’t understand the level of intensity that you have to play with and that takes a while. But they have to learn that pretty quickly.”
“I think Paschal (Chukwu) and Bourama (Sidibe) are doing a pretty good job inside. They had, I think, 19 rebounds tonight, between them. They blocked some shots and I think they’re doing what we’d like them to do.”
“But we have to play better. I think Frank (Howard) and Tyus (Battle) had a really good second half, but we need them to play better.”
“Geno (Thorpe) doesn’t have his push off his ankle yet, he’s only had a few days of practice in the past 14. So I think it will take him a while, but he’ll be alright.”
“Matt (Moyer) had nothing the first half, but in the second he played with some energy. He’s got to play with some energy to make us successful.”
“There’s a lot of work to be done, we just need to keep plugging along.”
When Geno (Thorpe) gets fully healthy what more can he do?
“Well I don’t know, I haven’t seen him. We have to wait until he gets healthy and until he can get some more practice in. He is good with the ball -- he had four assists tonight.”
Was there a certain lineup combo that impressed you tonight?
“No, we are trying to give everyone an opportunity to see. Like I said, I think our centers are set. We know what we are going to do there but now we have to figure out what else we’ve got.”
Was the use of full-court press in the last two games due to the offensive struggle?
“Yeah, we’ve got to try and see if we can get a turnover. We have been working on it and we have spent a lot of time on our press. The difference this year from last year is we have a shot blocker. That’s the only difference.”
“We probably would have pressed a little more last year if we had a shot blocker. I think we can press a little bit more this year and we can be better with our defensive pressure.”
In the half-court setting what changed defensively from the first half to the second half?
“Nothing really, we just got our offense going. They scored the same number of points, we gave them two threes, we didn’t get to the corner. Bourama (Sidibe) gets there better than Pascal (Chukwu) does. He has to get better at that. It was about the same defensively --our offense was just better in the second half.”
How do you feel about the ball movement in the first two games?
“Well, it’s better in the second half and we have to get better earlier.”
