Frequently Asked Questions: Pending Revision in Tax Law and Your Orange Club Membership
Please note that proposed changes to the tax code have not been voted into law as of this writing (December 15, 2017). However, the matter has received considerable attention from the House and Senate, sweeping changes are anticipated and could go into effect as soon as January 1, 2018.

As a service to our valued premium seat holders, we wanted to share developments and provide options for your consideration. Syracuse University is not in a position to provide tax advice. We encourage you to review these matters with your financial/tax advisor to determine the best course of action for you.
Â
How will proposed changes impact the tax deductibility of my Orange Club membership?
Current IRS code allows for 80% of a donation paid for seating or parking at an athletic event in an athletic stadium of an institution of higher learning to be considered a charitable contribution. Under the federal tax bill being proposed the deductibility of these donations for priority seating (i.e., ticket-related giving) would no longer be allowed.
Â
What action can I take to preserve maximum tax deductibility?
If you are in a position to prepay, in-full or in-part, any of your seat-required contributions associated with the purchase of season tickets covering the next two years (2018-19 & 2019-20) you may want to consider this prepayment option. Any prepayments received before the close of the 2017 calendar year will be held and applied to seat and or parking required contributions associated with your subsequent purchase of season tickets for football, men’s & women’s basketball and men’s lacrosse.
Â
Taking this action will likely preserve the 80% tax deductibility to the extent you are willing and capable of prepayment prior to December 31, 2017. Again, please review with your advisor to determine the option best suited for you.
Â
I am interested in taking advantage of prepayment, how can I ensure that I comply with deadlines?
You have several options. We strongly encourage you to contact a customer representative at 888-DOME-TIX (3663-849). Given the time sensitivity around this matter, our office will be staffed with representatives poised to assist.
