Duke Head Coach Quotes
Syracuse Men’s Basketball
Syracuse vs. Duke
February 22, 2017
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski
Opening Statement:
“Congratulation to Syracuse, they’ve been in so many close games, and they’ve hit big shots, (John) Gillon has hit big shots, (Tyus) Battle has hit big shots. They’ve been in those situation before, they performed well. I thought in the first half, we had a chance to get a little bit more ahead.
"I thought our transition offense was horrible, just horrible. We have five fast breaks where we didn’t get anything from on them. And then, we got payback from them. In the second half, I thought they had a lot of energy, the crowd was good, and they deserved the win."
Technically, what do you think changed in the second half?
“They hit shots, and their offensive execution was a lot better in the second half. And we hit shots. It was a high-scoring second half. Kind of started slow in the second half, and they started pushing the ball a little bit more. We did push it as much as the second half although they got back. Again, I go back to the first half, there were a lot of missed opportunities.”
How does the game plan changed in the second half with Grayson Allen and Luke Kennard get in foul trouble?
“You just adjust and they have to be smarter. We didn't plann for three guys with four fouls and that just what happens in the game. And there is no game plan followed exactly.
"For me it went exactly right, except the end. We are supposed to hit the shot and they were supposed to miss. We were supposed to win but they screwed up my game plan.”
Can you talk about the rivalry with Syracuse?
“I don’t take it as a rivalry. Well, everybody has a rivalry with us, everybody wants to beat us and has been that way for 25 years. That’s the world. I have to be ready for that, I have to be ready for my team to be ready for that. And I have new teams every year, although it’s the same old me, same old game plan.
"It's always an honor to come up here - crowds great, people (are great), I love Syracuse, obviously I love Jim (Boeheim), and his family. Congratulations to them. You don’t know what a treasure you have with him. I’ve been with him this 11 years, with USA basketball. He’s brilliant, competitive, loyal. He’s humble. I love the guy, and I will be forever grateful to him for what he did, and the bond that we developed during this, so i's hard for me to think of a rivalry when I think of Jim or Syracuse. It’s an amazing add (Syracuse to the ACC), not just the quality of the play, but the history of program."
