Head Coach Jim Boeheim Quotes - UNC Greensboro
Syracuse Men’s Basketball
Syracuse vs. UNC Greensboro
March 15, 2017
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Opening Statement:
“We obviously shot the ball really well and played well. We made some bad turnovers that we really shouldn’t be making at this stage of the season. I don’t have an explanation for it. I think that UNCG is a very good team. I thought to get them down 22 the way they played – I mean they won their last seven regular season (games) and came within a shot of getting to the (NCAA) tournament.
“We played really well for a long period of time. They started out making four straight threes in the first half. We did a good job on (Francis) Alonso. This is the first time this year that we’ve actually targeted a guy and did a good job on him. We were there for him the whole game.
“But, they made bad turnovers and (UNCG) converted them really quickly. Tyus (Battle) shot well early, Andrew (White III) shot well the whole game. I thought we did some really good things, moving the ball on offense and getting the right shots. They are a good basketball team and they played very well for the most part today.”
What did you think of Andrew White III’s performance tonight?
“He’s shooting the ball. When he gets it going like that he doesn’t miss many.”
How have you seen Tyus Battle develop over the course of the year and what do you think is the next step for him?
“If he hadn’t gotten sick, I think every game would have been great. I think we would have won a couple of those three games. That hurt and set him back but other than that, he’s probably averaging close to 16-18 points a game. His defense has gotten better, he’s taking the ball to the basket, and he’s really playing well.
“Every player is going to get better. He’s getting better this year. They all do.”
What did you think of Frank Howard's play tonight?
“I thought he made some good plays, in the first half his defense was good. He hit the open three.
In the second half our point guards didn’t run the ball club tonight. They didn’t know what they were doing against the zone.
“Andrew (White III) and Tyus (Battle) were really good. Tyler (Lydon) was good defensively inside. (Tyler) Roberson did a good job. Taurean (Thompson) scores, he just has to get back on defense and get ready. He’s still not getting back the way he needs to, there’s no excuse for that.
“They’re a good offensive team and they are going to score some points. We should have scored more points than we did but we just want to win, that’s the object of the game.”
Andrew White III broke Gerry McNamara’s school record tonight for most 3-pointers in in a season. Obviously they are completely different types of players. Who does he compare with?
“It’s hard. He’s a little bit like Demetris Nichols. He’s similar in a lot of ways.
“I think Andrew has gotten better, he’s putting the ball on the floor and getting to the basket much better.”
What did you think of the energy in the building tonight?
“I thought the people were good. I thought they were very good. Obviously, it’s tough to get out and get here. I was reading in the program tonight that we had 27,000 here once for an NIT game, that’s pretty amazing. The fans that were here were very good, very excited.”
What did you think of the experimental rules?
“I don’t think the four foul rule is a good rule at all. If you get five, but you don’t get the fifth one just after (the) 10 (minute mark) – now they get five more, so you don’t get a free-throw for 10 fouls. So if you’ve got them in some foul trouble within the fifth one of 10 minutes, you’d be shooting free throws. Now it punishes you because there’s no more free-throws.
“I think it’s a horrible rule, I don’t know where it came from or why. It makes no sense.
“It’s hard to get more than four, but you might get around four within eight or 10 minutes but usually you get a couple more and then the seventh one usually comes. Now you get one-and-ones for six minutes.
“It could work out that you might not get a two-shot foul. I don’t like it at all but we’ll see how it does.”
Have you caught any Ole Miss games this season?
“I saw part of their Monmouth game, we’ll see that tonight. Monmouth is really good and tough to beat at home. I thought they really played well. That’ll be a tough game.”
