Can you talk about Andrew White’s play tonight?
“Andrew shot the lights out. I feel like when we give him the ball and the ball goes up, it’s going in the basket. I’m really lucky to be playing with a shooter like that. It just opens everything else up for our bigs and for drives, and just makes the game so much easier.”
What do you know about Ole Miss coming on Saturday?
“Well, actually my high school teammate is the point guard for Ole Miss, so we’ve definitely been talking a little bit. It’s going to be good seeing him again. He’s a really good point guard, and I know they’re a pretty good team. We definitely have confidence that we can beat everyone, so we’re going to be ready for them.”
What would it mean to win an NIT Championship?
“I don’t think Syracuse has ever won an NIT Championship before, so we’ll be making a little bit of history. As a competitor, I just want to win and that’s the main thing – winning games. I don’t care if it’s the NCAA Tournament or the NIT – we’re just trying to win and keep on playing.”
Tyler Lydon, So., F
Do you notice a difference in anything between the NIT and [NCAA] Tournament?
“It’s a huge difference, I think, between the NIT and the tournament, but at the end of the day we’re not trying to think about that. We’re trying to just go out and win basketball games.”
What did you think of the experimental rules?
“I think it was interesting. I don’t know how much I really like it. Obviously, offensively it works out well, you’re going to get more shots from people like us. Defensively, it kind of makes you more hesitant to make plays. If your team already has three fouls, a guy goes up, you kind of have to play it more straight, I guess, or stop doing little ticky-tack fouls. So, I don’t know how much I really liked it, but, at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter.”
What did you think of tonight’s performance?
“I thought overall we played pretty well. Obviously, defensively, we need to do some things and still tighten up. We could rebound the ball better, and offensively we can execute better. But, overall I think it was a pretty good game.”
Coach told us it was obviously emotional Sunday. Did it take you guys a few days to kind of get over the sting? How did you do with having to play this?
“For myself it took me a little while to get over it. It’s something you work for all year, to make it to a tournament, go on a run, and obviously try and win a national championship, so we put in so much time and effort and hard work into that, and it doesn’t happen to come through, it’s really hard. But, at the same time, it’s not like we’re done – we can still play together, we can still play games, and try to win another championship.”
Andrew White III, Gr., G
You came out there hot early, and kind of kept it throughout – can you tell us how were you feeling?
“My big thing was just trying to get juiced up early – get going early – because obviously the vibe was a little different, the stakes were a little different, so I just wanted to try and light a fire up under my team and just make sure that we were ready to go and play this game so that we could take care of business.”
Did you guys have to create your own energy tonight?
“A little bit. I mean, that was kind of the emphasis coming into this game to make sure we’re ready to play just because they have a really good team. They were coming in here really juiced up with all the back stories ready to play in this game, so, I just wanted to make sure that I gave my team and my coaches and the fans that were here supporting us something to be proud of. I always try to find some motivation to make sure I’m doing my job and doing what’s asked of me, so I just wanted to try and lead the troops tonight.”
Could you just talk on, obviously it was working for you on the offensive end, scoring 34 points tonight?
“I hit some shots early. They had smaller defenders on me so I was just trying to create space off the dribble, and I think our spacing was a little bit better. My teammates did a good job of looking for me, and I just tried to put together an all-around game just because I knew that they had me scouted pretty tough, so I just wanted to make sure I did a little bit of everything just to kind of keep them on their heels.”
