Head Coach Jim Boeheim Quotes - St. Rose
Syracuse Men’s Basketball
Syracuse vs. The College of Saint Rose

Carrier Dome | Syracuse, N.Y.
Head Coach Jim Boeheim
Opening Statement:
“I thought the defense was good. I thought we did a good job rebounding the ball. It’s tough to get the movement we want without a point guard. That’s something we’re just going to have to keep working on.
“We’re very hopeful Jalen (Carey) will be able to practice by Monday. Howard Washington will probably be able to practice right around Monday. Frank (Howard) has been cleared for movement, shooting, some limited things. He will not play the exhibition game next week but will be progressing toward playing. We don’t know when. There will be no timeframe for him right now.
“I thought overall we did a lot of good things. I think they were a very good team for us to play. They handled the ball really well. They passed it well. They moved it really well on offense. They made us play defense. I think it was a very good game for us. They have good shooters and you have to cover them. I thought overall it was very good.”
What were your thoughts on Marek (Dolezaj)?
“He is who he is. He plays hard and does a lot of good things. He’s a very valuable player for us.”
What did you think of the full-court press’s effectiveness tonight?
“We are just trying to work on some things. I think we made them use the clock pretty good, that’s one of the things we are trying to do in the 2-2-1. There are some things we’ve got to get better at - the 3-red was something we haven’t worked on enough to get it where it needs to be. They (St. Rose) are a good ball-handling team. They’re not going to make too many mistakes. They have four guards out there most of the time. It did some good things.”
What was it like for you to coach Buddy (Boeheim) in a game for the first time?
“Well I was glad he was out there because he made some shots.”
What did you see from Elijah Hughes tonight in his first game playing?
“I thought he was a little rusty. At first he made a couple of bad decisions, but he’s a very good player. He can get himself open, he can step out and he can shoot the ball. When you sit out for a whole year, there is a factor there. He is a smart player and pretty good on defense; he reads the defense pretty well. It’s going to take him a while to get the rust off. He didn’t really even play that much his freshman year (at East Carolina) because he was hurt a lot his freshman year, and then he sat out for a year. It’s going to take some time.”
What did you think of Paschal’s (Chukwu) hustle?
“He did a couple good things out of the press, he did a really good job of coming up instead of sitting back. I think he changed shots and affected the game – that’s where he’s good. I think he’s much better and much stronger. I also thought Bourama’s (Sidibe) movement was good, but he wasn’t in sync tonight.”
“Overall it was a good first night, we did a lot of things. These games hurt us a little bit because we we’re playing out of position, so I think it has a little less value from that stand point. Tyus is much better when he is off the ball and can make his plays when he’s doing the point it’s just not the same. He’s much better when he’s off the ball and hopefully that will be the case very soon. Overall it was a really good effort. There are lot of things we can pick up from this game tonight.”
