Head Coach Jim Boeheim Quotes - St. Bonaventure
Syracuse Men’s Basketball
Syracuse vs. St. Bonaventure
Saturday, December 29, 2018
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Opening Statement:
“Our defense was better. The whole game was consistent. We made just a couple of mistakes early. They made threes but other than that the defense was good. We moved the ball. We got it up the court better. Tyus played at full speed. He was very efficient in what he did. It was a good overall game. Marek was good. I thought that we just had a more complete game than we’ve had.
"We had good practices which helps. We still have four or five practices ahead of us but we need to get better. I think the practices this week will help us. This will probably be the last time that we will get an extended time to work on things. Again, the practices have been good and I think that it showed today. We just played at a better pace and we made a couple of shots early which always helps. We didn’t shoot lights out or anything but it was a good overall game.”
Did you have the sense that Tyus was fired up today given last year’s performance against the Bonnies?
“No, I don’t think so. He’s been practicing hard. He’s been much more efficient this year. His shooting percentages are way up from where they were last year and I think that’s good. But he was aggressive early and just got going early on.”
Did you see anything different from Marek today?
“Yeah. I thought he was aggressive. He got some open looks and when he gets set and he gets time, he can make that shot. He’s been working hard in practice. He works on that shot every day when he comes in and does his shooting. He’s a good player. He has to play well for us and he was solid today.”
Obviously, the defense was good today but was there a specific component which made the defense was better today?
“We were just more active that’s all. They don’t have a real threat inside that helps us get to their perimeter shooters and that was a big key.”
Buddy had a big day today. Do you think he’s close to turning a corner in some way?
“He’s getting better he just needs time. Both Jalen and him just need time - they're freshmen. Some freshmen need time and very rarely are there freshmen who are ready to go right away.”
How was the team transitioning today?
“We need to run. Some teams you won’t be able to run against but when you can get the opportunities, you’ve got to take them. Jalen is still walking -- he’s a fast guy -- but he’s got to catch the ball and get it down the court. These are good game experiences for him, and he needs them. He has to react better in games like these.”
