Syracuse won its second New Era Pinstripe Bowl by defeating West Virginia 38-14 in a snowy game at Yankee Stadium.Â
Running back Prince-Tyson Gulley amassed a career-high 213 yards rushing on 26 carries and scored three total touchdowns (2 rushing, 1 receiving) to win game MVP honors. He found the end zone on runs of 33 and 67 yards. He also caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ryan Nassib.
SU scored 23 of its 38 points in the third quarter to break open what was a 12-7 game at halftime. The Orange started the second half with a 10-play, 80-yard scoring drive, capped by a Nassib TD pass to Beckett Wales. Gulley scored two of his touchdowns, sandwhiched around a 29-yard TD catch by WVU’s Stedman Bailey, to extend the SU advantage to 33-14. Brandon Sharpe closed the third-quarter scoring by forcing West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith into an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone. The result was a safety and a 35-14 Orange lead.
Ross Krautman accounted for the only points of the fourth quarter, kicking a 36-yard field goal.
The Orange defense was dominant, recording two safeties, blocking a field goal, and limiting WVU to 304 total yards.Â
