All-Century Team
Syracuse University’s All-Century Football Team featured a Heisman Trophy winner and nine College Football Hall of Famers. The team featured players from eight different decades, including several Orange standouts who showcased their talents in the NFL. Donovan McNabb, Marvin Harrison and Daryl Johnston were just a few of many All-Century honorees who went on to professional football stardom.
The team was announced on Oct. 27, 1999 following a selection process that included more than 6,000 fan votes. The criteria for selecting the team included all players who significantly impacted SU football with special consideration for those who were members of the College Football Hall of Fame, All Americans or who played in the NFL. Nominees were selected by three prominent figures associated with the Orange football program: Sports Information Director Emeritus Larry Kimball, former Syracuse Newspapers Sports Editor Arnie Burdick and former player, coach and administrator Joe Szombathy.
“Being selected to this elite team typifies the tremendous success that SU football has achieved throughout the 20th century. Some of these athletes are among the greatest to ever play college football. It was an honor for us to recognize their talents and contributions at our final home game of the century,” former SU Director of Athletics Jake Crouthamel said at the time.
Members of the All-Century Team were honored at halftime against Temple on Nov. 6, 1999.
