Head Coach Jim Boeheim Quotes - Virginia
Syracuse Men’s Basketball
Syracuse vs. Virginia
November 6, 2019
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Head Coach Jim Boeheim
Opening Statement:
“We just are not ready to play against that defense. I thought we were going to be a little better, but we just didn’t do the things we needed to offensively. They are very difficult to play against. They’re in the top two or three defensive teams every year. You don’t want to play them in the first game. Offenses take a little bit more time.
“I thought we did okay defensively. We did a lot of the things that we needed to do. But offensively, we just really never got movement and when we got it, we really didn’t get positive actions off the movement. So, tough game. They’re a tough team to play in the first game, but we learned from it and we won’t play anybody better defensively this year except for when we have to play them again. So, we learned some from it. We have all new guys and new positions and I think that showed out there.”
Were you surprised at how good Virginia was defensively?
“No. I thought they’d be better defensively than last year. I know that Tony (Bennett) won’t agree with me, but I think we were able to get by guys sometimes. You couldn’t get by (Ty) Jerome and (Braxton) Key is a tremendous defender. So, I think they’re at least as good defensively and offensively, they don’t make the shots that they could last year.”
What did you see tonight from your team’s performance?
“First of all, when we play them again, we have to move better than we did tonight. We did get some shots that I think we can make, and we did make. But a lot of the missed shots are just Virginia’s defense. But there’s some that I think we can make. They’re very difficult to play against.”
What did you think of your team’s defensive performance?
“We did a pretty good job defensively for a long point. They scored 10 points in the first 10 minutes. The problem is we scored two. So, it’s not defense. Our defense was respectable and, actually, a little better than that. But we have to be able to move better when we play them. So, we’ll get back and work on it.”
