Player Quotes

Were there any times today where you had to defend completely differently than normal in order to stay out with the shooters?
“It was all pretty similar. I think, if anything, when it got inside, we had four out so we let Bourama (Sidibe) go one on one with (Wajid) Aminu. We were peeling off more because they were going inside and their point guard was throwing it out immediately, so definitely staying at the 3-point line more than usual and always looking at shooters.”
You and Elijah Hughes had the four corner threes early on and then the focus shifted to Marek Dolezaj in the middle. What role did he play tonight in the offense?
“We trust him every time we give him the ball to make plays. He had eight assists tonight and 17 points. He can do a little bit of everything. Marek is getting better every day and situations like that against a zone when he gets in there and no one is near him, he is going to make the right play. We always trust him to do that. In games like this, it really benefits us when we have someone like him on the court.”
Joseph Girard III, Fr., G
What is it like to defend a team that takes that many threes?
“It’s hard, especially being at the top of the zone. You have to have your head on a swivel at all times and look to make sure you’re locating every shooter. And when there are multiple shooters on the floor, it is a lot harder to zone in on one guy or two guys when there are three or four out there."
The team had 22 assists and four turnovers tonight. What kind of pride do you take in that kind of efficiency?
“No matter who you’re playing against or what team you are, if you have four turnovers in 40 minutes, that’s usually pretty good. More likely than not, you’re going to be coming out on top. We pride ourselves in that. If you can keep the possession and not turn it away, usually you’re going to be successful.”
How did you personally change your defensive style to step up to North Florida’s three-point shooters?
“The biggest thing is taking an extra step or two above the 3-point line. Usually you’re playing back trying to get the high post -- as the guard responsibility before it gets in there -- but when you have a guy like (Ivan) Gandia-Rosa and (J.T.) Escobar out there shooting, you have to take a step out and give up the high post as well. That’s why the ball is going to get inside a lot.”
