Syracuse vs. NC State

Syracuse Head Coach Jim Boeheim
Opening Statement:
“Elijah (Hughes) got hurt in warmups. So, we didn’t know until he started that he couldn’t go. I thought that everyone did an unbelievable job. They really battled. Quincy (Guerrier) had to play a lot of minutes, which he is not used to, and he did a really good job.
“I thought these guys battled as hard as you could have asked them to battle. Joe (Girard III) made some really big plays to keep us in it. Marek (Dolezaj) got some opportunities, but he’s just not finishing the way he can.
“When you lose your best player, who also happens to be one of the three or four best players in the league, without being able to practice, it’s difficult. But our guys did everything they could, and we got right back in it. NC State hit 11 three’s out of 25 and that’s pretty hard to do. I thought our defense was pretty good, overall. But those three’s were the difference in the game.”
What did you think of Quincy Guerrier’s play?
“He’s getting better. He’s got to be better. He ran out of gas the last 10 minutes. He disappeared. He hasn’t played that much. I think he got tired. He was really good for the first 30 minutes of the game. Really good. Again, I want the best from him.”
How much does your game plan for Joseph Girard III change without Elijah Hughes?
“We just put the ball in his hands. Him and Marek – we put the ball in their hands more. Joe got it going. He was really good. He was playing (against) good defensive players. He kept us in the game. He just can’t make his three’s. Obviously, he had a great game, but he’s 1-for-10 from the 3-point line. He can make those. Sometimes he rushed them. Really, I think out of his 10 there was one tough three. The rest were shots he could make. We decided to go with him more without Elijah. They did a good job on Buddy. They were pressuring him. He got off balance. He wasn’t getting good looks.
"We battled hard. Hopefully we get Elijah back.”
