The No. 20 Orange defeated No. 16 West Virginia in their first bowl game since 2013. The win capped off a 10-3 season, Syracuse's first with double digit wins since 2001.Â
West Virginia opened the scoring with a field goal in the first quarter, but SU answered with a 10-play, 91-yard drive culminating with a 4-yard touchdown run by Abdul Adams. West Virginia added nine points in the second, but another Adams touchdown run secured a 14-12 halftime lead for the Orange.Â
SU was unable to find the end zone in the third, and they trailed 18-17 entering the fourth quarter. Syracuse responded by scoring 17 unanswered points to take the victory. The Orange came out strong in the fourth with a 14-yard touchdown pass by Eric Dungey to Trishton Jackson on the first play of the quarter. On the first play of the following West Virginia drive, defensive back Allen Stritzinger caught his first career interception, immediately putting the Orange back in the red zone. Kicker Andre Szmyt gave the Orange a two-score lead with a field goal.
A Jarveon Howard run delivered the 34-18 final score as the Orange defense shutout the Mountaineers in the fourth quarter.Â
Eric Dungey delivered with 303 yards on 21-of-30 passing in the final game of his illustrious Orange career. Kendall Coleman lead the defense with three sacks. Both teams gained over 400 yards in the game.Â
