Syracuse Head Coach Jim Boeheim
Opening Statement:
“I’m really proud of these guys. To be down four and have to get stops that we weren’t getting was impressive. Brycen (Goodine) did a good job defensively and Buddy (Boeheim) hasn’t played forward but got back in there and did a pretty good job. We got a couple of key turnovers there and turned them around to the other end. This is the first game where we missed key foul shots. We missed about six potential points. Two front ends and then a couple more. And we were able to overcome that. That’s what you have to do to win these games and it’s fitting that we win the game on Jesse (Edwards) getting the ball to Brycen (Goodine) for the basket. That was a heck of a play for two freshmen who don’t play much.
“For us to come back and win that game without Marek (Dolezaj), Bourama (Sidibe) and Quincy (Sidibe) is amazing to me and the crowd was a big part of that. They were really great at the end. Our defense made some plays at the end that we can’t make with the big guys. Jesse knocked away a couple balls and made a couple nice plays down there for us. But we can’t play with those three guys (Dolezaj, Sidibe, Guerrier) having 15 fouls. I told them in the locker room, ‘If these are fouls where we’re trying to get the ball, block a shot or get in front of someone, that’s okay. But we can’t have over-the-back fouls. Those are things that we can’t do and at this stage of the year, you really can’t do those things.’
The fight we showed in the last four minutes was amazing. It was an amazing win seeing that we were down four with those guys all out of the game.”
What made Jesse Edwards effective down the stretch tonight?
“He was a little more aggressive. He went up and got the ball. He definitely has some skills that he can use to help us and he helped us tonight. He was trying to get the ball to Brycen (Goodine) at the end. He hit it and we got a good bounce for a change. We didn’t get some of those for a while.”
What made you go with Brycen (Goodine) down the stretch?
“He’s been good in practice and he’s athletic. Additionally, he rebounds well and he’s a good defender out in front. Buddy (Boeheim) also did a good job at forward. We might play that group more now.”
What role did the crowd play in tonight’s win?
“The crowd was great. They made an incredible difference at the end. A huge difference."
What has Brycen (Goodine) been doing better in practice as of late?
“He’s improved since the injury to his face. He’s aggressive, athletic and he can rebound the ball. He’s a pretty good shooter and it was a tough shot that he made tonight.
“You have to admire the group that was on the court at the end for the last four minutes to be able to win that game. It was one of our more amazing wins.”
