 Preston Shumpert and DeShaun Williams combined for 48 points and Syracuse outscored league-rival West Virginia, 86-80.   Â
After trailing by three in the opening minute of the contest, Syracuse went on a 17-5 run, featuring 10 points from Shumpert, and never fell behind again. The lead grew to 11 by intermission as Shumpert tallied 17 of his game-high 25 before the break.   Â
The Orangemen opened the second half with a quick three-point field goal from Shumpert, followed by a deuce from Williams. The outburst earned SU its largest lead of the game, 47-31.   Â
The Mountaineers managed a late charge with a 12-4 run to reduce the Orange lead to three with 2:34 left to play. Williams answered the threat with a three-point field goal and a layup before combining with Shumpert for three-of-four points off free throws to finish the game at 86-80.   Â
Griffin handed out a career-high 13 assists and added 13 points and three steals to the cause. Williams finished with 23 points and Damone Brown had 15 points and 10 rebounds, giving him his fourth double-double in the last five games. Shumpert had a game-high four steals to go with his 25 points.
