Travis Fisher, who spent nine years in the NFL as a defensive back and has coached the position in the college ranks for more than a decade, was hired as Syracuse's Cornerbacks Coach for the 2023 season.
Fisher has a knack for developing players to succeed at the next level. In the past five seasons, nine of his players have gone on to ink NFL contracts, including first-round pick Mike Hughes, second-round selection Cam Taylor-Britt and third-round pick Shaquill Griffin.
In his one season with the Orange, Syracuse finished fourth in the ACC and in the top-25 nationally in turnovers gained (22), including nine interceptions.Â
Fisher was most recently the defensive backs coach at Nebraska for the past five seasons, after previously coaching for five seasons at his alma mater UCF across two stints (2013, 2015-17) split up by one season as the cornerbacks coach at Southeast Missouri State (2014).
This past season, Fisher's secondary held its opponents under 180 passing yards in six of the 12 regular season games. The unit led the Nebraska defense to rank 44th nationally in passing efficiency defense, and improved as the season went along, allowing an average of 147.0 passing yards per game over the final five contests.
This came on the heels of the Cornhuskers posting its best defensive season in more than a decade the year prior, allowing just 22.7 points per game, the program's best mark since 2010, doing so against a gauntlet of a schedule that featured eight teams with nine-or-more wins. Three of his disciples earned All-Big Ten honors, including Taylor-Britt, and senior safeties Marquel Dismuke and Deontai Williams.
The 2021 campaign was the third-straight season that at least three of his starters earned all-conference honors. Every starter in the Huskers secondary claimed the accolade in 2020 on a squad that finished sixth in the Big Ten in total defense. Disumke and Williams were named All-Big Ten for the first time, Taylor-Britt claimed his second of three, and Dicaprio Bottle wrapped up his career as a three-time selection.
Lamar Jackson joined Bootle and Taylor-Britt as 2019 All-Big Ten honorees, while the secondary kept opposing quarterbacks in check once again. Six of Nebraska's 12 opponents were held to less than 165 passing yards, including four who didn't reach the century mark. The black shirts ranked in the top-35 nationally in passing efficiency defense, a feat they accomplished in both his first two seasons at Nebraska.
Fisher arrived in 2018, making an instant impact. They team finished 34th nationally in passing efficiency defense, a mark that was a 61-place improvement from the year prior to his arrival. After inheriting a unit that allowed more than 275 passing yards per game in 2017, he limited five of their opponents to less than 200 in his first year.
Before Nebraska, he was the defensive backs coach at UCF in 2016-17 after solely coaching the cornerbacks in 2015. He helped lead one of the most remarkable turnarounds in college football history, taking a team that went 0-12 to a perfect 13-0 record and Peach Bowl victory in his three-year span there.
Over the 2016 and 2017 seasons, the Knights thrived on takeaways, ranking third nationally over those two seasons combined, led by 35 interceptions, and recorded nine defensive touchdowns over the two-year stretch.
In 2017, UCF was second nationally in picks and led the American Athletic Conference, en route to the team finishing sixth in the final Associated Press Poll. The AAC champions, the Knights ranked third in the FBS in scoring defense and passing efficiency defense. UCF's 20 interceptions ranked fifth nationally, and two were returned for touchdowns.
Five Defensive backs on the 2016 UCF roster went on to ink NFL contracts, led by Shaquill Griffin, who was taken in the third round of the 2017 draft. The 2016 squad posted the 12th-best passing efficiency defense in in the country. The Knights tallied 15 interceptions – 12 by defensive backs – and returned four for touchdowns. Individually, Griffin ranked fifth nationally with 1.5 passes defended per game and his 15 pass breakups were second in UCF history.
Fisher spent the 2014 season at Southeast Missouri State, coaching corners, for his first full-time coaching job. He earned that job on the heels of being a defensive quality control coach at UCF in 2013, where he helped the Knights to a 12-1 record and finished No. 10 in the AP Poll after defeating Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl.
His path to coaching came following a nine-year NFL career. A standout player at UCF, Fisher totaled 130 tackles from 1999-2001, leading to him being taken in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams. He was the highest-drafted UCF defensive back in school history, until Hughes developed into a first-round selection under his watch.
Fisher played for the Rams, Lions, Seahawks and Ravens in his NFL tenure, recording 341 tackles, 11 interceptions and 32 pass breakups. His two pick-sixes and 203 interception return yards in 2003 led the league.
A 2001 graduate of UCF in Criminal Justice, he is married to Frenchie Fisher. He has five children: Taelor, Taliyah, Triston, Aria and Travis Jr.
