Syracuse and USRowing national team alum Justin Stangel begins his fifth season as a member of the men's rowing coaching staff, his first as associate head coach. He most recently served as assistant coach for the Orange women's rowing program during the spring of 2013.
The former Orange oarsman has enjoyed a highly-decorated career with USRowing after departing Syracuse in 2007.
Â
Stangel helped lead the head coach Justin Moore's Orange women to victories at the Kittell and Orange Challenge cups, in addition to a second-place finish in the varsity eight and a third-place finish overall at the 2013 BIG EAST Championship. The team ranked No. 19 in the country following the conference regatta, its highest ranking in eight years.
"As an athlete in our program, Justin made his mark with his tremendous work-ethic and leadership ability," Reischman said upon Stangel's hiring. "Having him as a member of our coaching staff just seems like a natural progression. His experiences at Oxford and with the U.S. National Team have really allowed him to expand his rowing knowledge and I have no doubt that he will be able to pass this on to our athletes."
Â
Stangel was a member of the US Senior National Team from 2010-12, most recently training at the Oklahoma City High Performance Training Center. His national squad accolades include:
Â
“I am very excited to be back in Syracuse working with the rowing team,” Stangel said. “I really enjoyed my four years here at SU and rowing under Dave Reischman, so it is an honor to be back and working with the women’s rowing team. Syracuse University and the rowing team had a big impression on who and where I am today, so being able to come back and help the student-athletes get the same out of their time here is an amazing experience.”
Â
After graduating from Syracuse in 2007 with a degree in health and exercise science, the Dean’s List student attended Oxford University in Oxford, England, earning a Master of Science in science and medicine of athletic performance in 2009. While at Oxford, Stangel served as vice president of the University Boat Club from 2008-09.
Â
At SU, Stangel helped lead head coach Dave Reischman’s Orange to nine cup race wins in his junior and senior seasons:
Â
He also helped guide Syracuse’s varsity eight to a second-place finish in the petite final (eighth overall) at the 2006 IRA National Championship.
Â
Prior to his SU and US Senior National Team days, Stangel rowed for the Junior National Team (U18), placing ninth in the coxless four in the 2002 World Championships in Trakai, Lithunania before winning the silver medal with the men’s eight at the 2003 World Championships in Athens, Greece.
Â
Also a talented chef, Stangel worked in banquet and restaurant kitchens in Oklahoma City from 2010-12, including events up to 600 people and five courses, on his way to reaching the title of Sous Chef.
