Alex Zaroyan joined the Syracuse staff as an assistant coach in 2023.
Zaroyan has been instrumental in player development, performance analysis, and team tactical organization with the Orange program.
Zaroyan arrived in Central New York following a successful season at George Washington, where he helped guide the Colonials to a 7-5-6 record in 2022. GW posted a 122 percent increase in wins from the previous year and ranked among the top 15 nationally in defensive metrics, highlighted by a 0.20 GAA, .800 shutout percentage, and a 450-minute shutout streak, one of the longest in program history.
Before joining GW, Zaroyan spent two seasons at Tennessee-Martin, helping the Skyhawks to a 17-9-2 record and the 2021 Ohio Valley Conference Championship. That season, UT Martin’s staff earned OVC Coaching Staff of the Year honors, while Kamryn Chappell was named OVC Defender of the Year and Parker Gelinas earned Freshman of the Year. The 2020 campaign also saw Emely van der Vliet capture OVC Freshman of the Year recognition.
Earlier in his career, Zaroyan served as an assistant for both the men’s and women’s programs at Angelina in Texas. In 2019, he was elevated to co-interim head coach of the men’s team, leading the program to its first postseason appearance and regional semifinal run, including its first-ever win over a nationally ranked opponent. That same season, two players earned national team call-ups with Colombia and El Salvador.
Zaroyan’s coaching resume also includes experience at Division III Ursinus in 2018, a stint in USL League Two with the Colorado Rush, and serving as the inaugural head coach of the Virginia Marauders in 2023. Across his career, he has coached at nearly every level of the American soccer landscape, Division I, Division III, junior college, and USL League Two.
He holds a U.S. Soccer B License, Scottish FA C License, and other licenses/certifications from U.S. Soccer, Scottish FA, and United Soccer Coaches. In recognition of his work, Zaroyan was selected to the United Soccer Coaches “30 Under 30” Class of 2023–24, a national program honoring rising coaches in the sport.
Off the field, Zaroyan brings an analytical background through his work with Match Analysis, logging more than 750 hours of match data for Major League Soccer, Liga MX, the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams, and numerous NCAA Division I programs.
A native of Monrovia, Calif., Zaroyan earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Temple and a master’s degree in strategic communication from Tennessee-Martin.
