Dave Reischman is entering his 22nd year as the Head Coach of Syracuse men’s rowing and has transformed it into one of the nation’s premier programs. In addition to building a program that consistently contends in the IRA grand finals, Reischman has fostered a culture that prioritizes character-building and leadership.
Reischman coached the Orange varsity eight to its third-straight grand final appearance at the 2023 IRA National Championship Regatta where the Orange placed 5th overall.
It marked the fifth grand final appearance during his tenure. The 2023 varsity eight also earned the first medal for Syracuse at the Eastern Sprints in over 40 years when the Orange placed third behind Princeton and Yale. The Orange went undefeated in cup races during the spring season losing one head-to-head race in both the varsity eight (Cal) and second varsity eight (Cal) during the regular season. The foundation for a tremendous spring season was set when the Orange was the top collegiate crew at the world famous Head of the Charles Regatta finishing second overall behind the US Men's National Team.
In the summer of 2023 Reischman guided the Orange to the Temple Challenge Cup finals at Henley Royal Regatta, it was the first time the Orange have raced in the finals at Henley in over three decades, a feather in the cap of a tremendous racing season for Syracuse.
The 2022 Varsity 8 finished fifth at the IRA, and Syracuse ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation during the 2022 regular season. Five student-athletes were named IRCA All-America while five earned IRCA Scholar Athlete honors.
Hired in 2002 to succeed longtime coach Bill Sanford, Reischman has coached for the U.S. national team six times throughout his career. He and his staff focus on maximizing individual athlete potential and creating a competitive team environment that drives camaraderie at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse. That work has made Syracuse men’s rowing a perennial Top Ten team at the IRA.
As the program builds on its recent success, Reischman and his assistant coaches are looking for student-athletes who desire to keep raising the team’s standards of academic and athletic excellence. To move from being a Top Ten to a Top Three program, he and his staff are searching for rowers who will put in the work and proudly represent one of the nation’s most historic rowing teams. Training and racing for Syracuse represents a relentless commitment to the pursuit of excellence.
Prior to arriving on The Hill, Reischman was the head coach at Oregon State where he helped the Beavers to a fourth place showing at the 2002 IRA Regatta. From 1989-94, Reischman served as director of rowing at Gonzaga University. Reischman started his coaching career as an intern at Harvard University during the 1987-88 school year, working with head coach Harry Parker. The following year, Reischman became the freshman coach at the Florida Institute of Technology, a position he held for one season before moving on to Gonzaga.
Reischman earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Gonzaga University, where he graduated summa cum laude.
