SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sports and trivia usually go hand-in-hand, so try this one:
Question: How many schools made both the men's and women's NCAA tournaments AND won a college football bowl game this school year?
Answer: Just six – and Syracuse is one of them.
That kind of success is certainly not trivial, but a real measurement of the hard work and commitment SU student-athletes and coaches have put in to make the climb.
Here is a listing of the six schools to accomplish this rare triple, with their combined seeding total from the NCAA tournaments (of course the lower the number, the better).
1. Louisville - 7
2. Syracuse - 9
Michigan St. - 9
4. North Carolina - 10
5. Oklahoma - 15
6. Nebraska - 15
Now, let's take it one step further.
Question: Of those six schools, can you name the two schools that have won bowl games and had both men's and women's teams in the NCAA tournaments each of the last two years?
Answer: Louisville and Syracuse.
While football starts spring practice and begins their mission for a fourth bowl win in five seasons, the Orange basketball programs head out in the next few days to Buffalo and Lexington for the NCAA tournaments. Just 24 schools overall made both the men's and women's NCAA tournaments, and here are the top 10 by the combined seeding score:
Duke – 5
Louisville - 7
Baylor - 8
Connecticut - 8
Syracuse - 9
Michigan St. - 9
North Carolina - 10
Iowa State - 10
Kentucky - 11
Florida – 12
Of course full coverage of the men's and women's tournament games - including previews, highlights and photo galleries - can be found on Cuse.com.
