CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 18 Syracuse women's rowing team out-performed its seeding in two of three NCAA races on day one of the Clemson Invitational on Saturday.
The Orange posted its strong showings in the morning session before the afternoon session was postponed due to weather. The crews will race two sessions on Sunday on Lake Hartwell, weather permitting.
Syracuse started the morning by posting a fourth-place finish in its seven-crew varsity eight race. In a race in which the Orange (7:12.2) was seeded fifth, it beat 15th-ranked Wisconsin (7:14.4) for fourth-place by 2.2 seconds and beat sixth-place Dartmouth (7:17.2) and seventh-place Iowa (7:31.9) by open water. No. 20 Indiana (7:05.8) won the race, while No. 12 Washington State (7:06.6) was second and No. 14 Harvard-Radcliffe (7:09.4) was third.
Harvard-Radcliffe won the O'Leary Cup, the trophy awarded annually to the winner of the race between the Orange, Dartmouth and the Black and White.
SU's V8 posted the eighth-best time overall of the 21 crews that raced in three different heats.
"To out-race our seeding, finishing with open water on Dartmouth and overlapping decks with Radcliffe," head coach Justin Moore said, "This was probably the best race we've had in the O'Leary Cup in quite some time. We had a real barn-burner of a grouping and felt really good about how the team raced."
The Orange's second varsity eight (7:36.7) placed fifth in its race behind crews from Harvard-Radcliffe (7:28.2), Indiana (7:31.8), Washington State (7:32.1) and Wisconsin (7:33.3), and ahead of Iowa (7:50.7) and Dartmouth (8:00.4).
"The 2V8 rowed really good for three-quarters of the race and competed really well, but struggled in some conditions in the third 500," Moore said.
Syracuse varsity four (8:27.1) recorded the result of the day, recording the second-best time of all 21 crews behind only Wisconsin (8:19.5), which won the Orange's heat. SU finished with open water over the rest of its field: Harvard-Radcliffe (8:28.7), Washington State (8:36.0), Iowa (8:41.3), Indiana (8:51.0) and Dartmouth (8:55.7).
SU's second varsity four was third in its race, behind UCLA and Iowa. The third varsity eight races were held with rolling starts over approximately 1,900 meters as conditioned worsened on the race course, with crosswinds over 20 miles-per-hour. The Orange finished fourth in its race of seven crews.
