CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 17 Syracuse women's rowing team swept Duke in all its early session races before losing to host and No. 5 Virginia in its second session races at the Monticello Invitational on Saturday on Lake Monticello.
The four-team regatta featured two races each by Syracuse, Duke, Michigan State and Virginia in the first, second and third varsity eights and the varsity four.
In the first race of the day, Syracuse's V8 beat Duke by an open water margin of 4.7 second, crossing in 6:48.2 to the Blue Devils' 6:52.9. That proved to be the third-best V8 time of the early session as Virginia (6:30.0) beat Michigan State (6:37.9) in its opening race.
In the second session, SU's V8 lost to the host Cavaliers by 9.1 seconds as UVA crossed in 6:30.6 and the Orange finished in 6:39.7. Syracuse's time was again the third-best as the Spartans (6:38.2) beat the Blue Devils (6:46.2) in the other race.
"This was an opportunity for our team to race against one of the nation's best in Virginia," head coach Justin Moore said. "Our women used the opportunity really well and realized what they need to do to reach that level. It is essential that we line up against teams of this caliber because that is where we are going."
Syracuse's 2V8 dominated its early race vs. Duke, winning by 24.3 seconds before getting bested by Virginia in its late race by 13.0 seconds. Both of SU's 2V8 times beat Michigan State's times.
The Orange's varsity four, the reigning ACC Crew of the Week, continued to row strong, topping Duke in its opening race by 7.9 seconds before losing to the host Cavaliers by 5.8 ticks. The Spartans' early time matched up .2 seconds better than SU's, but the Orange had the better time in the late race by a 2.8-second gap.
"The varsity four continued to show that they are one of the top 10 fours in the country," Moore said.
SU's 3V8 posted a 9.7-second victory over Duke in its first race and then fell to Virginia's 3V8 "A" by 11.4 seconds and the Cavaliers' 3V8 "B" by 6.8 seconds. The Spartans did not field a 3V8 boat.
"In terms of racing and travel, turning around from going to Clemson, racing three times and then coming back to Virginia and racing twice after taking care of academics all week, this group is doing what they need to," Moore said.
The Orange moves on to postseason racing now as it will compete at its first ACC Championship on May 17-18 on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
