BOSTON – No. 18 Syracuse women's rowing won four of five events including the varsity eight race to successfully defend the Orange Challenge Cup vs. Northeastern and Penn on Saturday on the Charles River. The Orange's second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four also recorded wins.
This marks the first time Syracuse has successfully defended a cup since 2005 when it retained the Orange Challenge Cup.
"I really have to give credit to the poise of the crew," Moore said. "They fell behind and a younger or less experienced crew would have lost, but we stayed with what we do well, which is carry speed at our base cadence. We put ourselves in a position to have the lead and be able to react to the other crews at the end."
Syracuse's varsity eight covered the 2,000-meter course in a time of 7:13.3, 2.3 second ahead of second-place Northeastern and 10.5 seconds ahead of third-place Penn.
"The varsity race was really hard fought," Moore said. "Each crew at one point or another had the momentum and the upper hand. Penn led everyone for the first 500 meters, we were the superior crew from the 500 to around the 1200-meter marks, and Northeastern was the fasted crew late in the race."
SU's 2V8 won in a time of 7:27.1 with an 8.3 open-water gap over Penn (7:35.4) and Northeastern finished third in 7:43.1.
"We were really happy with the execution of the 2V8," Moore said. "The power of the crew made itself evident over the race course. They broke it open at the 1000-meter mark and didn't look back."
The V4 was the Orange's most dominating performance of the day, winning by 25.1 seconds in 8:17.9, ahead of second-place Penn (8:43.0) and third-place Northeastern (8:43.6).
"We feel like we have a very deep team this year," Moore said. "We are making a statement about every NCAA boat in our program. For the V4 to win by that much against these teams was a powerful statement."
The SU V4B beat Penn in a head-to-head match-up in a time of 8:49.6 to 9:02.8.
Penn recorded the lone non-Orange victory of the day in the third varsity eight, finishing in 8:13.8 while SU came in in 8:25.0 and Northeastern was third in 8:28.6.
The crews rowed in a headwind starting at 11 mph and building to 13 mph by the end of racing. The water was choppy at the start and calmer at the conclusion of the racing.
The Orange Challenge Cup has been awarded to the winner of the annual Syracuse-Pennsylvania-Northeastern varsity eight race since 1979, except in 1994, when no race was held. Northeastern leads with 16 wins, Penn has won 11 times, and the Orange was won seven times, with six of those seven coming in the last 13 years.
SU's last win in Boston came in 2005. It has won the cup in Syracuse (2009) and Philadelphia (2013) since.
The Orange remains in Boston to race for the Kittell Cup on Sunday against Boston University and Minnesota. SU will be looking to complete the weekend sweep and return to Syracuse with both cups they brought with them to Boston.
