SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's basketball team will be heading back to the islands for Thanksgiving this year. The Orange will compete in the Junkanoo Jam on Grand Bahama Island in the Bahamas on Nov. 27-28.
The eight-team event features two four-team brackets. Syracuse will be playing in the Lucaya Division and meet East Carolina in its first game on Thanksgiving Day at 2 p.m. Eastern. The other matchup will feature South Carolina vs. Wisconsin at 4:15 p.m. The winners will play in the championship game on Friday at 8 p.m., while the losers will meet in the third-place game at 5:45 p.m. on Friday.
"We are very excited to be participating in the Junkanoo Jam," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "These games further strengthen our non-conference schedule and provide us with tough competition while getting to play in a beautiful setting in the Bahamas."
All games will be played at St. George's High School in Freeport on Grand Bahama Island.
Advance tickets sales are not yet open. Tournament passes will be available for $60 for adults and $30 for children ages 5-12. The passes are good for all tournament games in both divisions.
The Junkanoo Jam also has several travel packages available through the Grand Lucayan Beach & Golf Resort, the official tournament hotel. Fans wishing to watch the Orange in the Bahamas view the different options at the Junkanoo Jam official website.
Three of the Orange's non-conference games for the coming season are now set. It was announced on June 4 that Syracuse will host Penn State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 4 in the Carrier Dome.
Tennessee and Penn State won the Lucaya and Freeport divisions, respectively, in last year's Junkanoo Jam.
The Orange has been no stranger to early-season tournaments in exotic locales in recent years. Last season, SU won the Paradise Jam Reef Division title on the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2012, SU competed at the San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico, and before 2011's trip to the Hukilau Invitational in Hawai'i, the team played in the Cancun Thanksgiving Classic in Cancun, Mexico in 2009 and the Bahamas Sunsplash Shootout in 2010.
The 2010 trip to Nassau was the Orange's only other trip to the Bahamas. Syracuse defeated Clemson, 77-58 after falling to No. 2 Baylor in the opener, 77-43. The win over the Tigers started the current six-game winning streak for the Orange in games played outside the United States. Syracuse went 2-0 at the San Juan Shootout in 2012 and 3-0 last year at the Paradise Jam.
Syracuse is coming off its inaugural season in the ACC, a campaign in which the Orange went 23-10 overall including a fifth-place mark of 10-6 in conference play. Syracuse received a bid to the NCAA Tournament in consecutive seasons for the first time in program history and recorded the first tourney win in school history when the sixth-seeded Orange defeated Chattanooga in the opening round. The successful season also included SU's highest Associated Press ranking in program history when it was No. 20 on both Dec. 23 and Dec. 30.
East Carolina is coming off a 22-8 season in which it went 10-6 in Conference USA. The Pirates were upset by Florida International in the C-USA Tournament and then lost to George Washington in the WNIT first round. They return just one starter from last season, but it is leading scorer (18.4 ppg) and rebounder (7.5 rpg) Jada Payne.
South Carolina is coming off a 27-4 campaign in which it went 14-2 in the SEC to win the conference regular season title and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen where it lost to North Carolina. The Gamecocks return all five starters from that team, led by guard Tiffany Mitchell (15.5 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 3.5 apg) in addition to adding the No. 2 ranked recruiting class in the country.
Wisconsin went 10-19 last season, including 3-13 in the Big Ten. The Badgers are expected to return just one starter from last season, but has added a pair of NLI signings and two transfers.
